I bought a Paramilitary 2 at OpticPlanet.com. The knife checks out in all the ways except one - the lanyard hole seems not to be chamfered. Is this a deal breaker or might it just be something that got by Spyderco quality control? Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Well to save yourself this problem you could have just bought it from a bladeforums sponsored dealer. You asked for any help offered and this is the best help I think could be offered. Hope it turns out real saving a dollar or two for this kind of headache is something we sadly see here a lot.

I cant find the disappointed emoji. So Ill just be harsh on you. Optic planet?? You bought a knife from a place called optic planet? All the dealers, knifecenter, usamadeblade etc that have the best prices on guaranteed authentic knives, you choose optic plant
Its 50/50 on real or fake at this point. How much was it? $5 less?? Ya killin me man. Ya killin me

super helpful guys.

I'm not an expert on counterfeits staunen2, but I won't rub your nose in it like these other 2.
I hope someone on here can help you with some actual advice. If you're really concerned you could prob send it into spyderco, and for a small fee they could help you out. Maybe contact their customer service department first and see what you're options are.
They're really great to deal with.
Or you could just return it to optics planet for a refund and follow the advice of these other two.
Best of luck man.

I don't know anything about that site, but I bought my first pm2 from the big river site a couple years ago before finding BF. I'm 99.5% sure it's legit, but learned here unscrupulous buyers have been known to buy real knives from them only to return fakes in the original boxes that are later resold. This appears to have even happened at a large, well-known outdoor retailer.

All my knives now come from sponsored, dedicated knife dealers and with peace of mind and great service. Maybe post some pics or search YouTube to get a better answer.

Optics Planet is a very large and reputable retailer. I have bought several rifle scopes for them and have had no issues. They are a $250 million company and I doubt they are going to risk their reputation by selling a fake $160 Spyderco. Call Spyderco customer support and explain your issue. They will be able to help and will most likely fix the problem or tell you if it is fake.

+1 for optics planet. I haven't bought knives from them but have used them quite a few times for ammo cans, mags, cleaning gear etc and I've always been happy. I'd say you're probably good.

I researched Opticsplanet before buying and they seemed ok. They claim to get everything they sell directly from the manufacturer and have a 30 day free shipping return guarantee. I thought it was worth a chance. Didn’t know about this forum or the recommended sellers until after I got the knife and noticed the lanyard hole. Everything else on it checks out (based on what I’ve been able to learn from internet research, anyway). I’ll try calling Spyderco cust service tomorrow. If they can’t help I’ll just return the knife and look for one from the seller's list posted above.
Thanks all.

FYI, Opticsplanet claims to be an authorized dealer for all products they sell. They have been around a long time. HOWEVER, using google it turns up at least one disturbing thread (from Spyderco forum) showing an obvious fake that was claimed to be purchased from there, a really bad fake too. That being said, could have been a case of buy, buyer keeps real and returns a fake type thing.

The op asked for any help and I told him to buy from a BF supporting dealer plain and simple. Should I hold his hand and tell him there is no chance that’s it’s a fake keep on doing what your doing ? Nope I offered the answer that wouldn’t produce his original question to begin with.

I rubbed his nose in nothing! I told him the truth don’t like my response use the ingore button. Nothing I said was mean or untrue and doing what I recommend would avoid this whole post.

How is that "help" after his purchase was already made?

And I guess this little quip was your idea of more "help"?

Seems odd for a counterfeiter to get what must be the more difficult characteristics of the knife correct (liner cut outs, etchings, bolts, smoothed cut out for the lock, etc...) and the less difficult, not. I’ll contact Spyderco tomorrow and see what they have to say.
Thanks again.

Welcome to BF. :)

Photos are a great way for us to ID fakes; take a photo of both sides with the knife open, close-ups of the tang etching on both sides, and a close-up of anything you're especially worried about. Drop them on Imgur (no account needed), and insert links to each photo into your BF post.

I hope your knife turns out to be legit. (And FWIW, I see OpticsPlanet all over the place; that wouldn't have raised my hackles either.)
