I simply can't resist a good-looking Ebay auction, which is what caused me to snap-buy this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/161618901736

I got it in the mail today, and I'm skeptical as to its authenticity. I posted a similar thread about a Sebenza that I found on ebay (it's a bad habit ), and many of you were so kind as to chime in with your opinions, which were able to help me authenticate it.

I haven't heard of counterfeit Seagrass Sebenzas, something seems fishy to me about this one. The knife is currently completely disassembled, so please ask for pictures of parts if you think it will help identify it. Here's the list I was able to come up with that are points against its authenticity. Let me know what you think.

  • Unmarked blade (aren't these stamped with a letter to designate the blade steel?)
  • Short, untapered screws
  • Unperforated washers, brightly colored
  • Double thumb lug is very blue (almost too blue?), which I see frequently in fakes
  • "Idaho Made" is present, but is not deeply engraved
  • The frame lock-side scale has no engraving on the inside for a manufacture date
  • The two channels on the frame lock side have an odd enlargement about in the middle
  • The overall fit is ever-so-slightly off, and even after thoroughly cleaning and reassembling, I can't seem to get the detent right (a problem I've never had with anything CRK)
  • Looking at other Seagrass models, this one seems to be lacking in color
  • The lanyard pin is very blue, and the lanyard is made with gutted paracord
  • Oh, and this feels quite damning: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Cust...625-Stonewash-Plain-9Cr18Mov/32279994903.html

Let me know what your thoughts.

Here are some nice images for your looking: http://imgur.com/5e11FHe,TPHit0W,8A2ncNc,pieMpIw,yp7xUTj,tCiegWk,DlvgADG,rxnJM2h,RR4dJZU,op1EDCh

Missing stamps on the blade and the scales.. I'm gonna say it's a fake. Also just looking at the lanyard pin I can tell something is not right. sorry man, hopefully I am wrong but it appears you may have been had

The eBay listing you posted lists the blade steel as 9Cr18Mov. Is that the knife and or buyer you purchased it from or just a reference to other fakes?

The bullet point link is to a website where you could at one time buy knives that look similar to this one. The ebay listing has the knife listed as 35VN. It's also listed as a Sebenza 25, which it obviously isn't. I'm guessing the seller isn't familiar with CRKs.

You hit a home run with your last eBay gamble on the Reg...

Unfortunately, it has been counterbalanced by the strikeout on this fake.

Can't win them all! I've started the return process with eBay...I guess Buyer Protection exists for a good reason. I hate to disappoint the seller who, I'm sure, didn't know any better.

98% sure the Spyderco military listed by the same seller is fake too.

Con artists often play stupid, that way the mark's greed will over ride caution "it so cheap because the owner doesn't know what he has." The mark convinces himself to buy.

FYI - the January 31, 2013 birthcard has been copied a lot. It's a fake. Sorry.

Thanks for posting. I probably would have went for that too. Bummer man.

I don't know much about Sebenzas, but it looks real to me. I would have taken that in trade without even thinking about it.

This is pretty messed up. As a watchmaker, I used to see a lot of fake watches; but even the really good ones I could usually tell by touch or smell, as weird as that sounds. They always used a low-grade of steel that has a characteristic odor. And the dial printing, hands, etc were never quite up to snuff. Some would use original movements/dials/hands & that made it much more difficult to tell. The engraving was a good tell, though. (on some makes, anyhow) The fakes always used laser which is very easy to tell from machine engraving.

Since knives don't require any microscopic work & they did some of the watches so well, I suppose I'm not surprised. It's a matter of time before they copy these to an effectively indistinguishable level. :(

No time stamp on the slab, way too many colors in the graphic, can't tell if the blade is polished or not. Anyway, it looks like a dud. Does the end of the pocket clip turn and is parallel to the knife??? Here's a pic of the real deal.

I have seen that one. Far too leery to pull the trigger on that one. If a deal seems too good to be true, it usually is. Some people do not know what they have, but the fact that this one keeps popping up every couple of weeks makes me leery of it. Will spend my $$$ on one I KNOW is the real deal...!!!

The Birth Card looks copied. With that same bad date. C'mon, you gotta trust a guy named Tony Steel...;-)

Might be wrong but a little research turns up facts that point to these being produced by a Chinese company that is affiliated with Smoky Mountain Knife Works that goes by the name of Wild Boar Knives and they counterfeit damn near everything. Most of the blades are actually D2. There were two listings. This gentleman had sense enough to end his listing.

Looks like a "best offer" accepted. Hope that one was real.
