Fake serial numbers? Buyers beware!

I have recently seen too many claims by sellers on "that auction site" that their LB-7's are serial numbered, yet they either will not post a picture of it or if they do it is blurry.
In some cases it looks as if the serial numbers have been etched onto the bolsters.
I am new to this site and would appreciate anyone with knowledge to share it with me.
Here are 3 pics to illustrate what I am seeing;
In the first, it obviously looks as if the serial number was etched.
In the second, the serial number is more questionable.
In the third, the serial number is clearly stamped.

G'day mate, they all look similar to the authentic serial numbers I've seen on LB7's and LB8's as well.....I would have seen perhaps a few hundred serial numbered LB7's in my time and they all appear to be similarly etched...
The real problem with fake etches has generally related to ""added"" 0000 type etches indicating the Schrade knife was a proto or used for photoshoots for their flyers...some are very questionable as to their authenticity...
I can't really see why anyone would add a fake etch to look similar to the above....collectors can usually work out by the number of handle pins and the tang stamping changes if the serial number relates to the knife...
Just my thoughts, they all look legit to me and we have now worked out the approx. manufacture time frames V the serial numbers on this site if you search...

I agree with Larry. One thing about these serialized knives that has not been mentioned- the ones destined for Australia all have the serial numbers stamped upside down.

Larry303, That serial number in the first picture doesn't look to you as if was hand etched with an engraving tool?

If you carefully examine all the knives with serial numbers showing in the LB7 polling thread I believe you will find your answer.

Thanks. I did just that Fatcity. It does seem to be legit. Also other members of the forum have stated that their knives have numbers that look etched instead of stamped.
That survey also helped me place all of my knives into a time frame, and reasure me that I have correct boxes. My oldest being the only non-alpha # I own is my carry, maybe should have chosen a different one to carry.

Hope You're Enjoying Your Schrade Collecting!!

I agree with Larry and Cal on the numbers -- *upside-down* Nice One Cal!!
Also maybe a die position in the stamp wore out and was replaced by a 'not so exact' new one

Please try to remember Schrade was selling sharp tools for the most part - to be used, re-sharpened, eventually discarded and replaced
The fact that, whether 11 or 111 years from when they were made, we find them collectible is amazing

In one of the other LB7 threads, it boiled down to the switch from 4-pin to 3-pin was between N27722 and N29256
I've also seen 4-pins starting with 'Q', have one myself - Have never seen a 4-pin 'O' or 'P'

Maybe the 'Q' knives were held back for the Uncle Henry replacement policy?
We'll probably never know

There are also 4-pin Taylor Schrade LB7's made in China
Watch for the USA on the tang

My 3 & 1/2 Cents:
If I feel uncomfortable with an auction, I may contact the seller or just Scroll Down and leave 'em be
Lost the best customer they never had - Land of The Free - Vote with your money - Still plenty of others to choose from

If the pics are unreadable, could be evil nefarity at play, could be a new at the auction scene grieving widow cleaning out her recently departed husband's toolbox or could just be a schlub (like me) that can't post a decent picture

Each of those situations has come back as a seller response to me

THANKS  to all the posters - we all learn more each day

Thanks Howie. Good information.
I will try soon to add my knives to the survey.

Some good points, there, Rich. Thank ya. Ya know it's good... It comes right outa Baahston!

Howie, didn't Schrade USA use the Swenden(? spelling) key construction on the 4 pin LB7's?
The Taylor lacks that design feature.

Hi afishhunter --

I think you're correct about the Swinden system used on LB7 but can't be sure
Haven't taken any Schrades apart
If it is used - it's probably used on both 3-pin and 4-pin
There are others more knowledgeable than I am on that topic

I like to use the search the forum feature ...
The search results are always full of cool facts and tidbits
And I can get answers quicker than waiting for a response

Hope You Are Enjoying Your Schrade Collecting!

I didn't think the Swinden key was used on lockbacks.

I've seen a list somewhere in this forum or over on AAPK by Mr. Vincent. (orvet)

No Swinden construction on the lockbacks folks, that shiny thing in the center of the bolsters is a stainless blade pin. You wouldn't see the pin if it was Swinden. The mechanics of lockback construction usually requires that the blade pin is the last pin inserted into the knife, whereas on Swinden style construction the blade pin and butt pins are pre-headed, and the center pin is inserted last.
