After reading everything on spotting fake Sydercos and not getting any real foolproof answers, I decided to try something. I used my UPC code scanner on my smartphone. I scanned the box. It works! Real Spyderco box's scan and fake ones do not.

Very interesting. I bet there will be a work-around soon.

I've been following trends in counterfeit hardware/software, and the counterfeiters are so proficient, even artwork and codes on the boxes make it seem real. It took me a lot of digging to finally discover my brother's harddrive was fake. Those counterfeiters work hard to steal their money.

...with the competition, in the end, the fake will be a better product than the real article...perhaps...

This is a very real possibility. Not to diss Spyderco (or any company). But with how hard they have to work to fool you, they by necessity have to step up their game.

Learn to identify the correct Spyderco logo based on location of manufacture (i.e. Golden, Taiwan, Japan, China, and appropriate collaboration marks like Schempp). Each of the engrave/laser patterns is unique/different. Take a close look at a couple of current knives (Golden fairly smooth, Japan vertical, Taiwan circular from inside outward, China horizontal slightly angled). Well that's at least one option, except for older knives that pre-date the Spydie logo.

Good to know you have an Original box. But . . . . it says little about the knife in the box.

Hmmm, one post charlie is an expert on counterfeit knives?

My guess is he's a dealer of fake knives and went through the trouble of copying the exact bar code so now people can buy from his e-bay store with confidence because someone on the internet said only legit spydercos scan.

Where are all these great fakes everyone is talking about? Not in my pocket.

I saw one, I think, on the forums here, or at least I'm pretty sure the consensus was fake... that's really the only one I've seen with my own eyes, and I'm not even sure it was fake. So... yeah.

Or the knives could be bought from reputable sources. I work with a knife dealer and have never seen a fake spyderco. They are reasonable cheap to begin with I just dont get it myself.

There are telltale signs of fakes that are quite obvious once you know what to look for. I'd like to list them but it has become frowned upon and I don't remember the technical terms to describe them. Some think the chinese follow these threads. I wouldn't doubt it.

Eggggggggggggggggg zactly :)

I can stick a Frost Cutlery knife in a legit Spyderco box but it doesn't change the knife. Usually the printing on the knife is noticeably different from legit Spydercos however as some have mentioned, soon there may be very little to distinguish between fake and real.

I was gifted a fake southard a while back from my mom, she isn't a knife person. For a couple of weeks I thought it was a legit southard until I ran across a thread on fake spydercos, that's when I found out I was gifted a fake. To be honest, the only difference between the real and fake southard is the titanium's finish. The real is stonewashed and the fake is bead blasted, and if I never read about the fake ones, I'd still think I have a real southard:o

Well anyways, I did some digging on who sent her this fake and I came across a Chinese company called "Wisdom International Trade Co." who is a manufacturer for everything from DVD players to kitchenware:confused:, what was really weird was that they didn't have any signs of fake knives on their website...

Trying to know the truth about fake products is a wild goose chase, so I just try to support china as little as possible now...

In the Spyderco brand they only copy the Southard , Military and the Paramilitary 2 (they do a couple of others but not nearly as much as those 3) . I actually have a fake Paramilitary2 that I bought knowing it was a fake . I had read so much about the PM2 and wanted to try one (size wise and feel in hand) without spending the $150 on a real one , in case it just wasn't for me .

I did a lot of reading up on the fakes and what to look for and then went about looking for a very well made copy of the PM2 . Now I want to say here that I think Spyderco makes a great knife and I'm NOT putting them down in any way . I had a Spyderco Native for years and loved the knife . Sadly I just lost it on a recent late season camping trip . But I have to say that the fake PM2 I have came shaving sharp (literally) and works so well and so smoothly that I personally can't see spending the extra money for a real one . Just being honest here , not looking to get BBQ'd .

Like others have said , they work so hard to make the copy exact that they really ARE pretty much as good . With the exception that I'm sure they must use a lesser steel in the blade . But the one I have is supposed to be D2 and weather it is or not it doesn't dull easily .

Dude, you're about to be crucified or blackballed or both

Yeah maybe , but I'm just being honest . People can take away what they want from what I wrote . I wasn't implying in ANY way that Spyderco knives are not worth the money . All I mean is that the fake PM2 that I bought seems (to me at least) to be better made that I would have thought given it's price .

There is always the if you can hold it you can feel the fakeness test. That is if you are well educated anyway. The screws are usually a give away, and the finish on the liners. The quality of the g10 also usually gives it away. And typos on the box are never a good sign lol.
