I keep seeing how "hard they are to tell apart" and they use practically the same materials. It sounds like the fit and finish isn't perfect but it still seems good enough. Why aren't more people picking up fake custom knives? You can buy several for the price of one real one. Aside from the moral issue, are the knockoffs any less substantial?

Any conversation that starts off with "aside from the moral issues, what do you think" is going nowhere. I'm gonna report this now and hopefully we'll put it out of its misery.

You, sir, need to give some serious thought to what's important in life. Fakes, thievery and scams are no bargain. Even though they may be cheap.

This is quite right, people that buy fakes deserve the substandard items they get be it knives, watches, bags or clothes. They also deserve the scorn of the people that support the knife world and it's makers by buying the real deal and keeping an eye out for those fakes and copies.

Um, because some of us have ethics? Ya think?

Sheesh, you need to give some serious though about how seriously you take these forums. Clearly direct copies are wrong, but we're not lawyers to debate that. Look how many people own sanrenmus.. And most importantly, this isn't to support fraud. I'm simply asking peoples opinion about the quality of them and how they perform compared to the real thing. Lighten up.

Hello? I'm not just a lawyer, I'm kinda Spark's lawyer. So maybe you need to get a clue.

I completely understand where you are coming from. And I agree for the most part. But let me play the devils advocate: what if someone wanted a custom knife but couldn't afford it? Or what about people who simply don't want to pay top dollar for a tool? Scorning someone from buying a knock-off wont stop them from saving money. Just food for thought. But anyways this is all off topic- how do fakes perform compared to genuine ones?

There is no comparison - Genuine is Genuine, Fake is Fake. It's really not that hard to fathom. For most of us anyway....

Well, I'm guessing the quality isn't anywhere near as good...but then you won't ever catch me paying more than $150 for a folder, and even then I only buy when I break the one I own. My Kershaw Blur and CS Voyager XL Clip Point are rock solid. It's all about aesthetics, bro...some people just like the pretty knives. And I guess they're willing to pay for them or sometimes for a name. I would do the same with a gun, honestly. Sig, Colt, Walther, Beretta...and I'd customize of course. People want a good base for anything they plan on customizing or keeping locked up somewhere. You can't build a house without a good foundation.

Unless you're brain-damaged. You have to account for that, Alan.

Apparently, some significant amount of the population was dropped on their head at birth. That's the only way I can explain it.

There are so many quality affordably-priced legit knives out there that one really can't use that excuse for stooping to buying rip-offs.

I want a Ferrari but I can't afford one. That doesn't mean I'll go and buy a Toyota MR2 and body kit it to look like one. That would make me a great big numpty and every one would quite rightly laugh at my Fisherprice Ferrari and the pathetic fool driving it.

Buy the best you can afford and just dream about what you can't. :)

Here is a bit of reading for you.......

It's saddening to see some people cry so much over topics like these.. especially over knives. But I guess 15,000 posts later and knives would probably take over my life as well.

Anyways, I'm against fake knives. Just like to see if the chinese companies do a adequate job on the durability.

Don't post if you're just going to female dog it up about how much you hate fake knives. We get it.

Buy a licensed copy - Cannot afford a Snody - buy a Benchmade. Cannot afford Ken Onion buy a Kershaw. etc... I could go on, but hopefully you see the point. Your supporting the maker, legitimate manufacturer, and usually your quality concerns are minimal.

Forum rules http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/announcement.php?f=699&a=98

Fakes/Homages: As fakes and homage items are a legal gray area and obviously hurt the hobby, no fake or homage items may be sold on the Exchange. Members may not knowingly sell unlicensed knockoffs or counterfeit versions of knives (or any other goods) based upon the designs of their legitimate owner, manufacturer or custom maker. Additionally, members may not sell any knife or item known or suspected to be other than as described in terms of its lineage and authenticity.
