Fakes on eBay being sold as real

Browsing eBay last night I was looking at some sold listings of worker models. (Would love to own one someday) I found a seller with several sold and several active selling fake spydercos and Benchmades. The big thing for me is that the seller doesn't disclose that they are counterfeit. And they are going for a lot like 100 to 150 etc. I know they are coming from China in droves and at least when you buy it from a Chinese website you know you're not getting the real deal but when you're selling a 5 dollar counterfeit knife for 150 dollars to someone that's very dishonest and wrong. So I messaged the seller and they said something like, is your life so bad? Or something like that. But I think you know what if someone saved pennies for a long time just to get a knife that they may or may not find out is fake. Maybe it's their first spyderco or Benchmade.

When I was in highschool maybe like 2004 I traded a pair of Oakley sunglasses to a guy at school for a different pair of Oakleys. The thing is that mine were not authentic and I was fully aware and his were but I didn't tell him mine were fake. So I traded him and after a day or two I felt like a total piece of garbage so I ended up telling him I needed to switch back. I don't know how in good faith people can just rip other people off like that. I've been off and on homeless for a lot of my adult life hopefully not anymore but it's been a rollercoaster. 100 dollars would be a major loss to me.

Yeah I would venture to guess this has been an issue for longer than you’ve been alive

One of the worst offenses I've seen is counterfeit Edgeratis for sale before the authentic ones were even released. It's frustrating to me, so I can only imagine how much it frustrates sal and co.

Buying common brands on the internet you have to consider the source and think twice before buying something that looks suspicious. Occasionally someone will post a message saying they bought this knife for a real low price on the internet and they are wondering if it is real, don't be that person.

Not just Spyderco . Cold Steel and even Demko . Almost anything the least bit popular .

Really shameful , but Ebay don't care a bit . They make money on it . Not a new thing , but the clones have gotten much harder to detect .

No US government agency seems the least concerned either . USA , province of China .

About the only sure way now, is to buy only from a very trusted source .

Sometimes people return a fake to a trusted site that sold them a genuine one in the genuine box, and then it gets resold as genuine. So even then you could get ripped off. Not even sure I should post this lest I give people more crooks ideas.

It is both sad and infuriating. Can't pin a year, but not so long ago faked factory knives were extremely rare. Now it's Benchmades, Gerbers, Beckers etc.

DO report it to eBay. I flagged someone selling fake MAC chef knives recently and eBay shut them down.

Yes so it's doubly important to consider the source. Buying from places like Costco and Amazon you could have a problem with them selling a returned fake.

Harry's first law of life........If it's too good to be true......it is!

We began having problems with counterfeits early in the '80's. It became a bigger problem n the 90's. Now it's bigger than ever and it's frustrating and expensive to deal with. There does not appear to be any solutions other than using our own attorneys to fighting this assault on original manufacturers.

Years ago, we had an audience with the House of Representatives in Washington DC. We were one of several companies speaking. Companies that were going out of business because of the Chinese counterfeits. We had to send staff and attorneys at a very high cost to be there. Unfortunately, nothing came of it.

We have attorneys on retainer in China to try to raid Knock off factories, but there is so much corruption in China, that conclusions, if any, are only temporary.

It is truly a sad state of affairs.

That lawless country is a plague on society. I'm sorry you have to deal with this, Sal.

Sad state of affairs indeed. Most people are aware of the corruption in China, and more people becoming aware how their illegal ventures of all sorts have been virtually protected by our own government. They would not be able to stop every illegal shipment of fake knives, but they could do much if it was prosecuted with some vigor. And not just knives but all the fake products they throw out.

The other thing you have to be aware of is someone buying a fake on fleabay then buying a real one on the big river site and returning the fake to them. If you buy the knife then you end up with a fake thinking it was real. That is why you are much better off buying from a known knife site.
