Im looking to get a Falcata sword. Something about the blade design i love but as with everything you get what you pay for. Not that it will ever get used but i want it to be functional and a good quality. Ive found two i like online but really have no idea which is better. Anyone have experience of either of these swords or companies? Any thought on what sort of quality i would get. Both say spring steel or high carbon steel but that seems vague. Ive emailed them for more info. Any others out there i should consider, European suppliers only, import tax to the UK for products from outside the EU is a killer!

Cheers all

Zombie Tools Hellion. It's a bit more modern in the hilt but has the classic falcata blade form. 5160 spring steel and pretty tough.

Yes i have emailed them and it would be my first choice but having looked into it more by the time it gets to the UK with the shipping and our fantastic import tax system i would be looking at $420-450. Just to much money to justify hence why i said European suppliers since you don't pay import tax within the EU. Im looking at £200 maximum.

Kult of Athena have a very nice array of Greek swords available at less than $200 including a few Falcatas.

There are a few of the more expensive models there too. I'd avoid that Tacky looking "Horse Head" Falcata from Deepeeka though (Simply because it's Deepeeka and i've heard horror stories about there blades). The Windlass Steel Spanish Falcata looks decent for the same price though at $149.95. Or if you can spend that bit extra, the historic Falcata on there by Scorpion is probably the best of the bunch in terms of quality for price ratio.

There's also a nice Spartan Lakonia on there too which is well worth a look at :)

Thanks for the link BlaKeK. Some lovely items on there. Ive order the Historic Falcata by Scorpion swords. Looks a very functional blade and i love the fully shaped tang and simplicity. Exchange rate is very good as well, almost $2 to £1 :-)

I do need to sort out a sheath for it through, they didn't have any available. Anyone know of any good leather workers in the UK?

Ahhh a fellow Brit i see? Isn't it so frustrating the lack of choice and the outrageously inflated prices for swords here in the UK. It's not the retailers fault, it's the insane "Acts" that have been passed to deter people from buying blades which force our homegrown retailers to charge insane prices because of the VAT. But it's a pain for us UK collectors having to wait for a sword to arrive from half way around the world... Also, watch out for any hidden customs fees you might be saddled with when buying items from overseas :/

As for your sword, it was a damn good choice. Probably the best Falcata on the market for it's price in My opinion. Chris at Scorpion Swords makes some awesome weapons. Big Shout out to him...

If you like your ancient short swords (like me) then i suggest checking out...

All the best mate ;)

Edit: I also had a look for a UK based Leather Worker, this one came up first, give him a shout :) http://www.karlrobinson.co.uk/index_leather.php

Chris is also a superb archer, and is the bow expert on Top Shot. He can pull off some pretty ridiculous stunts, as well as making a solid blade. If you can get leather of your own, it can be pretty fun to learn some leatherworking, and it's not as hard as you might think.

I'm toying with the idea of making my own. I can normally turn my hand to most things and have been watching a lot of videos on sheath making. Im looking for a simple sheath with no frills so for a starter project it may be worth a shot. Can anyone confirm if this leather hide is suitable for sheath making, its 3.5mm thick veg tan leather which i think is what i would need if i was to give it a go:

Received my Falcata and its very nice. Comes with a dull edge so will need a little work. Very happy with it and the service from the States. Was worried about the sword ban in the UK even knowing this is exempt because its a forged steel blade but Kult of Athena put cover letters in with the shipping paperwork and it went through customs in a few days. Knocked up a sheath this evening for it and went with a distressed look. Not finished yet, have to add straps and some other bits but it suits the sword nicely.

sucks it comes dull, that really throws me off when buying a new blade..too easy to put a decent edge on most blades to not come from the manufacture sharp...nice sheath BTW

I have a couple khopesh swords made by Chris Palmer. They're definitely tough and effective chopping weapons.

Tinkerer that is a great Job on the sheath. I'm glad things worked out well for you. Chris's simple yet strong design's are great. That sword will out last both of us ;)

Sharpening 1095 steel, any hints? I can sharpen hawks from cold steel and other axes & knives to an edge capable of taking off your hair but i have to admit this 1095 stuff is taking more work. Want to get the Falcata to a nice convex, hair removing edge for no other reason than doing it but its very slow going..........

Yeah, 1095 takes a bit more effort because it is such a hard wearing steel. But once it is sharpened up, it holds an edge extremely well. The design of that particular sword will also make it awkward to work with, but the videos below will show you how to sharpen with Sandpaper to a very fine edge (it would also work with a whetstone)
