Well I started one of my life long dreams of becoming a Falconer . I enrolled in an apprenticeship program and have been working with a great guy named Sam who owns many different birds, I got to handle a full grown Red Tailed Hawk and Great Horned Owl the other day and have been working with a Harris Hawk named Phoenix! I highly suggest anyone who has a love for birds of prey to get involved in the art of Falconry because there is nothing like it, I remember being just a small guy and my father pointing out the different kinds of Hawks in the sky and now Im actually handling and training them. Ill update with pictures if people are interested.

Hell yeah! post up some pics!!! I want to get into falconry quite badly, but it seems like it can be a long and painstaking process

Awesome! I'll post some pictures soon, Sam has one Ill ask if I can use where his golden eagle killed a coyote

It really isnt that pain staking! Its very enjoyable , Well at least here in Canada. Hers some pictures of Sams birds. Ill get some of Phoenix next time!

That is another instructor with his Gyrafalcon which are pretty rare and a very intermediate bird to handle. Beautiful tho

Its all pretty amazing to see in person, All of his birds are very well socialized and are perfectly comfortable around crowds and even dogs!

This seems like an awesome hobby. My high school mascot was the falcon and our school paper was the Austringer. I've always been intrigued by the idea of hunting with birds of prey. Enjoy and keep us posted. :)

Holy Cow! That Golden Eagle is massive!

You're living a dream of mine, since I read STephen King's Gunslinger books. Congrats!

Very cool! I've always thought of doing this. Did that hawk kill that coyote?

I love birds of prey, and feel bad every time I see a road kill owl or hawk, which unfortunately is commonplace in Ventura Co. CA.

That is another reason I wanted to get into the sport so badly, 70 percent of raptors dont live past there first year due to things like that. Most birds can live up to 20 years in captivity.

Congratulations, sir.
I could be wrong but, I think I remember reading somewhere the states have, or are considering banning the practice.

Hopefully I am wrong.

Even though I live in the city, most of the industrial area is marshland, and full of amazing wildlife.
There was a hawk that roosted on the roof of my shop, and after work we would sit back and drink beers and watch it dive bomb rats. Really spectacular to watch that bird.

Choosing my first raptor soon! I was advised to get a Harris Hawk, Would really love a Peregrine Falcon tho, Just a little to much for an apprentice tho! I never believed it but these birds actually hit around 200 mph when diving for prey. Saw one in action bait training and the thing is like a jet when it flys past your head out of no where. I was told f18s were actually designed after the peregrine and the "F" In current fighter jets actually stands for Falcon.

Here in NEPA we have Hawk Mountain one of the best migratory paths for raptors. It's a AWESOME thrill to go there. They actually count each bird ! One day we were there they counted 1200 of one species of hawk !!!
You've picked a fascinating hobby ,enjoy it !
