Falkniven F1 concerns

hi there, i just got myself a falkniiven f1 model knife. i noticed that the handle was made of rubber and was wondering if in time and hard use that the rubber will expand, or flex, and allow water and debris behind the scale. i'm wondering how water tight the bond between the knife and its handle are. since it is not removable i'm concerned about this as its main function will be a hunting and ice fishing knife, so it will get wet. If anyone has had this knife for a long time or hard used it i would like to hear your feedback on the matter.

I have a Fallkniven though not the F1.
I wouldnt worry; Fallkniven makes quality knives. Use the snot out of it with confidence.
Further more your Fallkniven comes with a ten year warrenty against defects.
The F1 seems to be popular. Owners/users might tune in.

Oh that's great i didn't know they had a 10 year warranty that definitely inspires confidence. after i take it on a few trips i will get back and share my experience with the knife. as of now i can say that it cuts boxes and clam shell wonderfully.

No need to worry!
The F1 is made to cope with wet and cold climates.
I clean my knife before it goes back in the sheath. No problems.
If You ever wear out the handle, send it to FK and ask for their rehandling service.
Personally I like to do rehandlings as a hobby and my F1's has got handles in Stag and wood.
The knife in my avatar is the F2 and it is used year around, mostly on fish and wood.

Regards
Mikael

The F1 grip is something called Thermorun. Fallkniven says, "Thermorun is a sturdy plastic with rubber-like properties and is quite insensitive to heat aging, water, weather, chemicals / solvents in general, ozone and DEET, the latter include the mosquito repellent and is notorious for dissolving even plastics. When we will design a survival knife Thermorun is always the first choice because it provides a good, safe and comfortable grip at an affordable cost." It's like Kraton but a little harder. Good stuff, even when gooped up with blood/fat etc. Don't worry about it.

They’re made for a cold and wet climate, so I would hope it’s not a problem. My F1 has been winter camping quite a bit and I’ve seen no ill effect. I haven’t stripped the thermorun off to check, though.

I use a 3G F1 for freshwater fishing trips and my old VG10 F1 on saltwater trips. They get wet a lot. Neither has ever shown any sign of water entry into the tang. And I wash them like a kitchen knife afterwards. The 420j2 outside is very rust resistant. However it will discolor/patina with salt water which comes off easily with flitz/simichrome.

I have been a Fallkniven fan for many years and actually have experienced what builds up under the handle of my A-1. I found lots of dried crusted and some greasy rust coloured staining under the full length of the tang that required quite a but of scrubbing and polishing to remove but no pitting. I wouldn't worry about it whatsoever. I personally have an A-1. S-1 and an A-1.

Edit to add: No Ive never had the rubber type stuff melt, expand, crack or do any more than wear naturally over time and hard use.

Those handles are quite durable, should last half a lifetime. After that just throw an 1/8" rope wrap over it and finish the rest of its life.

Awesome to hear thank you for the input. Just out of curiosity, how were you able to clean underneath the handle? Did you have to replace it? If so could you tell me how you went about this process, any info would be greatly appreciated

Was about halfway through the week I had realized the previous weekend I had left my knife somewhere outside around the house. Turns out it was on the back bumper of the motor nearest to where I was working. It had spent almost a week getting run over in a gravel driveway. Needless to say even tough Thermorun was pretty beat up so I thought I would just re-handle it myself. For the most part it was intact, just abraded to the point it wasn't fun to hold onto while using. I spent quite a long time trying to cut the old one off before finally succeeding so I can attest to the handles toughness.

...... I can neither confirm nor deny whether or not I may have or may have not yet had the old handle replaced on that knife at this point ;)

Thank you very much this has been very helpful to me I appriciate you taking the time to tell me your story :)

I have a Cold Steel LTC khukuri which has been abused, neglected, and subject to the worst heat a West Texas garage can offer. It's over 20 years old and the Kraton handle is still great.

No worries really with the hard thermorun. Bonded pretty solid to the tang. If any moisture does get in there , I wouldn't worry much as it's a stainless knife. Just dry after use all knives as regular procedure.

Fret not my friend, F1 is one of the best knives in its class. The handle is thermorun because it is not cold to the touch when you handle it when it is cold outside (which cannot be said about G10 or Micarta). Every single detail about this knife was thought through so do not overthink it just use and enjoy.

The only time I have ever heard of an issue with the handles when someone split the handle while batoning. The front finger guard saw damage. Use the F1 as intended and that handle will outlast all of us. Great knife!
