Falkniven VG-10 vs G3

After disillusionment in the hunting knife arena, I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a F-1 and am wondering if its worth it to spend the extra money and get the 3-G version vs the VG-10 version. Has anyone here owned both or done any comparison between the two options? I did a search but didn't find a thread asking for comparisons of both. I'm mainly looking for long term edge retention, the ability to be neglected for long periods of time and ease of resharpening. Thanks.

Points 1 and 2 are in favor of the 3G and points 2 and 3 are in favor of the VG-10(not implying VG-10 edge retention is junk). If I were buying one I would get the standard VG-10 model and carry some sandpaper to touch it up if needed. The longer edge retention with the 3G isn't worth an extra ~$100 IMO and 3G takes longer to sharpen. But, it's whatever you like!

I have an F1 in 3G and an S1 in VG-10.

My experience is that the 3G takes considerably longer to sharpen. I think VG-10 is the way to go.

It's like S90V or any other aggressive super edge retention steel. It takes longer to sharpen but holds it's edge considerably longer. It depends on what you want the knife to do.

Thanks guys, I think I'll go with the 3G because in addition to general use, I go on a two week hunt each year in which I don't have a lot of time for knife maintenance even after processing a deer or too. Beyond washing it off, I don't really want to have to sharpen it in camp if I don't have to. I have been using a Cold Steel Pendelton hunter with VG-1 for the last couple of years and it wouldn't even make it through one deer without getting dull.

If you go for the 3G then you should look into there TK2 or SK1 knives.

They do however still have some limited 3G F1 knives available.

Well, picked up the 3G and it finally came in. OMG what a cutting machine this knife is. I probably should have gotten the TK2 but it was considerably more expensive and I go camping a lot and will use this as a general purpose knife as well so I opted for the F1. I am very happy and was a little concerned that it was going to be too big/heavy for my processing needs, but it's just right. Thanks for all the recommendations. Once I get it dull, I'll post an AAR on attempting to re-sharpen it. First convex knife so it should be entertaining if nothing else.
