I was treating some leather the other day, boots, sheaths, leather handles, etc... I was carrying my GEC 48 improved trapper in white bone and got some brown kiwi shoe polish on the handle without noticing it, when I went to clean up, it had dyed a small spot on the handle significantly brown. So, I thought what the heck, i'll rub it in to the whole handle and see what happens.... These are the results of the shoe polish and I am quite pleased.

I also thought I would show a few pictures of the before and after of beeswax treatment on my Scagel hunter.. I just wanted to share this subtle way to dye bone with you guys and show a few before and afters. Feel free to comment and post pictures of traditional knife dye jobs and the such.

I'm really liking the warmer color, and the cooler weather!

Before.

After

Also a couple shots of the Scagel's beeswax treatment.

Eric, I think you improved both of them (and they were DARN nice before, too!)

The beeswax on leather I can understand and it looks wonderful. But shoe polish on (white) bone - whoda thunk??? (Jack beat me to the "thunking" part). ;) It looks really, really great! Please keep us posted and let us know if it rubs off or lightens up after carrying it for a while. Great job on all three pieces!

That accident looks pretty good. I wonder how long it will last.

I also wonder how long it's gonna stick around. I put on another heavy coat then used a sealing coat of beeswax and a little tan-kote. I don't know if it will help, but I shall find out!

The color is very gold now, I love it. I'm gonna carry it for a week or two to see what happens.

The work on the Scagel was a very good change. I am curious if the dye job on the trapper will stick for a long period. If it works for awhile I would like to try Oxblood polish on one.

That's thunking ahead! ;) :D

Well, now I'm going to have to try that! I don't have any bone handled stuff that is white, but maybe I will try to dye the next knife I do. Very cool. I'd never have thunk it. :)

You might find that it fades and gets to be kind of pink. They use a lot of red in their brown polish.

Have a great day

Robin
