Fallkniven A1 on a Spyderco Sharpmaker?

Hi All,

I searched for this and didn't find the answer so...

I have a shiny new Fallkniven A1. I'm wondering if I can maintain it with my Spyderco Sharpmaker? If so: 40 deg. (as with my Delica 4 and my CRKT S-2), or 30 deg.?

That is how Fallkniven sharpens them, with a small v-bevel. Their initial angles on such blades are close to 20 from what I have seen on the ones I have used. However in general, aside from really heavy work (metals, bone) you would get better performance from 15.

For something like the Fallkniven A1, a big, heavy (to me, anyway) blade, I think I'd prefer the tougher edge. But, more importantly at this time: I'm not yet good/practiced enough at this knife sharpening thing to be ready to attempt re-profiling an edge ;). Maybe later. So the 40 deg. holes on the Sharpmaker, you're saying (for the factory equivilent angle)?

Yes, note though that since the Fallkniven are not exactly jig sharpened the first time you use the Sharpmaker you will have to regind the edge a little to make it an even 20/20 edge. However since the Fallkniven edges are so radically thin, this is only a few minutes.

/me wonders about the advisability of obtaining the diamond rods for his Sharpmaker--for this, and other, applications...
 
The edge on the Fallkniven knives are so thin that you can usually reshape them with the medium rods fairly quickly if necessary. Plus VG-10 isn't one of the really hard to grind steels anyway.

Good to know. Thanks, Cliff. Tho that was a kind of side-thought as much as a comment pertaining directly to the topic of this thread. But I'll leave that for another thread, perhaps.
