This is my first post here after lurking for some time now, and would like the advice of the enlightened masses here in regards to the Fallkniven A1 and the Cold Steel Recon Scout.
I'm looking for an all purpose camp/hunting knife that is pretty much indestructible (within reason, or not) and could save my rear if called to do so. Of course I must follow a budget and the A1 and Recon Scout fall within that margin and are my two top choices. I will pick up a BK CU7 at a later date, for those who might mention that knife.
I already have a fine hatchet so I don't need to chop down any trees, but if some unforseen calamity should befall me, a knife/axe would be nice. Again the A1 an CS RS seem to fit the bill to varying degrees.
Back to my dilemma. I'm pretty anal when it comes to making decisions in regards to the equipment I use. I will research the life out of an item before I commit to purchasing. I've checked the forums front to back and likewise the web. I've read the reviews of both knives here and at this site: http://www.physics.mun.ca/~sstamp/knives/reviews.html, and they both fit the needs I require. I can't have both tho:grumpy:.
So, this is where all of you come in to play.....I need your experiences and opinions to help sway my decision one way or another.
Thanks!-Tom

...That would be the CS Recon Scout, as the blade on that puppy is 5/16ths an inch thick at the spine, and is even pretty stout at the tip...AND the Carbon V steel cuts like the dickins.

Hi
I can't say anything about the CS, but I do have an A1.
This knife is really sharp, not too big but strong. It's become my
favourite knife for camping, hiking and outdoor use.
Sharpens easily on mousepad covered with sanding paper.
The VG-10 steel stays sharp for a long time.
The kydex sheath it came with doesn't look nice, but works well.

Hope I was of help.

I'll second Glockman99 reply, CS Recon Scout W/Carbon V that steel takes a wicked edge and HOLDS it ! It would take just about anything you could possibly ask of it and more. Heard about good deals on their seconds too, possibly save ya some $

I have both and use both. You aren't going to go wrong with either one.

Hey fudo,
If you had to gut a deer, which would you prefer to use?
And thanks to everyone for your posts! Tom

Both would do well, given your needs. The question falls down to, whether or not you need a stainless blade. If corrosion is a problem, get the Fallkniven. If not(and this is my personal choice), get the Cold Steel.

For chopping, I would choose the Recon Scout simply because it has a longer, slightly thicker, carbon steel blade. For camp food prep and utility I would go with the A1.

I would also choose the A1 for field dressing deer, although neither is very well suited for this. I would guess that the Recon Scout’s double guard would tend to get in the way, and its longer blade would make it unwieldy. Actually both the A1 and the Recon Scout are too thick and have excessive blade length for best control for fine cutting work.

Since you already have a good axe, maybe you would be better off with a smaller knife better suited for field dressing, food prep and detailed work? For instance, the Cold Steel Master Hunter and Fallkniven F1 would be good choices for hunting, camping and all round outdoor use. There are many more good choices for hunting type knives with 3 to 5” blades, such as the A.G. Russell Deer Hunter, the Benchmade Drop Point Hunter, the Buck Vanguard, the Grohmann D.H. Russell flat ground #1, the Spyderco Moran Drop Point and Temperance.

Can you hammer on the butt-end of a Recon Scout? I know the Fallkniven has an exposed tang that allows the knife to be hammered into something.

Bozoracing,

I've never even handled a Recon Scout, but I own its big brother the Trailmaster and an A1.

Here's a review of the A1 you might not have seen:

For an out-and-out survival knife, considering the above info, I'd go for the A1.

It's indestructible, rust resistant and sharpens like a dream using £2 worth of sandpaper and a mouse mat.
