I'm considering purchasing a Fallkniven A1. Or should I buy something else like Battle Mistress (probably more moola than I want to part with at the moment) or something similar in the Cold Steel line?

I like the looks and the price of the Fallkniven and I want something with a little heft in it.

I'm also considering the Newt Livesay machete like knife (I can't remember the model name) but I think that knife is in a little bit different class isn't it? So I suppose I hafta buy at least two knives. So many knives to choose from...ain't it great!

Check out Newt Livesay's Air Assault as a alternative to the A1 and the RTAK as a alternative to the Battle Mistress, thats what I went with and am real happy with both.
Still want a Busse of some sort though.
The Cold steel SRK is another choice as a alternate to the A1.The fallkniven stuff is real nice as well I really like my F1.

The A1 and Battle Mistress are two very different knives. If one of them would suit what you need the other probably would not (just talking geometry here).

Hoodoo,

Cliff's right. Then again, you haven't told us what you intend to do with the knife.

hehehehe... That might help in your decision and our suggestion of which knife to get for your particular needs.

I will probably be using the knife for some moderate chopping, twigs and small branches for hunting stand preps (shooting lanes and trails). Big stuff I cut with a small saw.

Also use it for any heavy duty chores around a camp. Cutting rope, making stakes, etc.

Sounds like your looking for a "Trail" or "Camp" knife....In that case Newts RTAK would be a good choice as would the Busse Basic 9 or Battlemistress. The RTAK is considerably more cost effective and will probably suit your needs just fine.

Hoodoo, for that kind of work the Battle Mistress is a little overkill. The A1 will chop most smaller wood easily enough as long as its not too hard and it would be much easier to handle on smaller work like rope and the like.

To be a bit specific, a 3" diameter Pine would be a bit difficult to cut down with the S1. You could do it but you would probably be wishing for something else. However the Battle Mistress would go through that pretty much like butter in about 3-4 cuts.
