I am looking for a hard use 6-7" knife for camping/survival and would like to keep the price under $150 . I already have a Cold Steel SRK a Becker Campanion and Brute and a Busse basic 7 . These are all nice knives but I want something new . How would the A1 do in this role ? I have never handled one so I dont know how it looks quality wise . Is it a step above the Cold Steel ? Any other choices out there in my price range ? Thanks , Mike...

Also , coated or uncoated blade ?

Mike,

I just barely got an A1. I haven't used it yet, but it looks like it would be perfect for what you want it for. There is something about handling a knife only 6" long but a full .25" thick. I imagine this knife will get you outta any trouble you find yourself in.

I would guess it is a step up from CS because of its VG-10 blade. An excellent all-around steel, and maybe the best all around stainless steel.

It's a super tough knife with a really thin convex grind, so it is protected against chipping. The tang sticks out of the butt a bit, so it can be used for a hammer, or to hammer the knife into something. It comes with a kydex sheath. You cannot go wrong with this knife, especially for $106.

Mike, I have never seen an A1 but own an F1. I chose the F1 ahead of the CS SRK. If the build quality of the A1's is as good as it is on the F1 you will be very happy with it.

Cheers

Sounds like you need the A1. It looks like a great knife.

If you're in love with Becker (understandable, since they're great knives at a great price), you might consider the Magnum camp. It's 2" longer and made of carbon steel, so it's a different animal, but a mean piece of knife too.

I just ordered an A1 and an F1 to replace the one (F1) I sold last week and have been kicking myself for ever since.

I also have a WM1 that I'm very fond of. IMHO you can't go wrong with any of the Fallkniven's.

Sergiusz Mitin just posted a review of the A-1 on Knife Forums, in the review forum. He was honest about being prepared not to like it because it would be too big, and surprised himself. It's worth reading. I still haven't found a reason to justify buying one, but can assure you that as soon as I do, I'll get an A-1 immediately. I've handled a couple of the smaller Fallkniven knives, and liked them a great deal. Don't think you can go wrong.

(PS -- you don't need a Busse or Mad Dog, as I'm sure several will suggest.)
