How do these two blades match up? Does the trailmaster have a significant advantage in chopping/brush clearing? Any advice would be much appreciated as I can't seem to decide...

There is a review of the A2 in the January 03 issue of Blade Magazine.

I also am thinking about getting a Trail Master Bowie.

I've never owned a knife with the carbon V blade steel. I'm a big fan of VG-10 steel as used in the A2.

I like the looks of the Trail Master over the A2. I hope some can give us some advise!

Have you looked at the Fallkniven models NL1 & NL2?

They are flat ground and have a guard similar to the Trail Master except they each have a stacked leather handle. I had a good look at these several weeks ago at a local shop...I was very impressed!

I have only handled an A2, never used one. My Trailmaster is one of my favorite camp knives, even though I have better and more expensive ones. It is the best chopping bowie I have ever used.

The carbon V holds an edge very well, and takes steeling and stropping very well also. I sharpens easily, and you can get this baby as sharp as you want. I thinned the edge out on my TM, and greatly increased the cutting and chopping performance. I did not have to thin it out greatly, but a little bit really helped. The TM is nicely forward balanced, which makes the chopping a pleasure. For close in work, the guard tends to get in the way, but this is not a knife for fine work anyway. I love the handles, nice and slim, just the way that I like them. Kraton is wonderful for grippiness when the handle is wet. I have not had any problems with my handle loosening, although others have reported this.

The A2 is significantly smaller and lighter, if my memory serves. I seriously doubt it can match the TM in chopping due to the weight and balance issues. It's convex edge is likewise very obtuse, at least the one that I was holding. Many folks here on the forums hold these knives in very high regard, and they are probably worth a look-see.

Comparing these 2 is probably not quite apples to apples due to the size differences. The price (if you shop around for the TM) is probably similar.

I've looked at Fallknivens Northern Lights Series... the ones with the stacked leather handles, and they beautiful. That's why I liked the A2, it had the same blade steel and a handle that I wouldn't feel guilty dropping in the mud. I've got to take a closer look at the SOG Bowies, I really like thier Trident... But I'm leaning tword the Fallkniven.
