Hey guys. Im in the market for a good all round camp knife/hunting knife/survival knife.

Intended usage:

Food prep. Battoning. Dressing game. Fillet fish. Trap and shelter making. Solid camp chores pretty much. Is the Fallkniven F1 a good choice or am i going to need something a little longer for the battoning part, or something a little thinner for the slicing part? Is the model F1 the best all round knife or would one of there other models be a wiser choice? How long does the VG10 steel hold its edge for compared to a 1095 blade say the RC3? Is the Fallkniven heat treat a good one and is this a great knife or just a mediocre one?

As always im open to other suggestions.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and i appreciate all your responses.

Since you don't really set a price point, then go for the Northirn lights. Better yet, get a bark river bravo 1 or gameskeeper or aurora.

Yes, the info in those two threads should answer your questions.

The F1 is an outstanding knife IMO. There are many others that can go toe to toe with it. The afore mentioned Bravo 1 is one example.

Size wise a 4 - 4.5 inch blade makes a great all rounder in my experience. For batoning and chopping you need to realize you will have to take smaller "bites" at a time.

You could also consider the Fallkniven S1. A bit larger and thicker, but still very usable as an all rounder.

So much of the "perfect knife" scenario comes down to personal preference, so it is hard to recommend one over another.

The F1 will do all that stuff. It's a great knife design-wise, and VG-10 is a great steel. It will take longer to sharpen than 1095 (it tends to be difficult to get the final burr off) but rust won't be a problem.

I luv my F1.... I dont batton my f1:)

for battoning i use my RAT 7
for slicing i use my MORA all Arround.

Actually F1 can do all the stuff. But if u want to use for a lot of battoning....just buy the s1.
For me, after bought the F1.... I think, i've to rest for a while in buying knife:) I've bought 7 knife (not included the machete) in 6 months and cant find a perfect knife for me until i meet F1. It's a perfect knife. VG10 is a good steel. I really luv the steel.

Now, i dont bother about people telling me about S30V, D2, 400 series steel....
If i wanna but another knife...definately i will go for VG10 steel or for the cheaper knife, i will go for MORA knife.

Good video.

This individuals experience with these knives certainly leans toward the F1 being the best "all round" knife.

Keep in mind there is always personal preference involved. If you spend some time on the Fallkniven Forum you will find that there are hunters there that prefer the H1 as their hunting/bushcraft knife.

Bottom line: Fallkniven makes top quality knives (as do many other manufactures). Blade geometry and length, handle shape and material, are all personal preference.

Actually using a particular knife is really the only way to know for certain if it is "the" knife for you.

Researching and receiving opinions from others is a great way to narrow the field of choice, but in the end, only time will tell if the knife is right for you.

The F1 is a great start. You will be purchasing a great knife.

Thanks guys for taking the time to answer my questions and further narrow down my choice. 1 more question. Are the handle slabs for the F1 removable? I dont see any screws or studs etc.

No, they're not. At least not removable and re-install.

They can be cut off if you want to re-handle the knife, but you can buy blade blanks, or already customized F1's if you want to go that route.
