Any thoughts on which one you would buy over another and why? I'm going to get one of them but I'm stuck trying to decide.

It all depends on how You intend to use it.

If hunting is # 1, the Nyala looks very good.
If allround quality's are more important, then it's the F1
If I would recommend with my heart, it's the Frey all the way! :D

Frej.

Best looking production fixed blade on the planet.

Particularly when the stacked leather has picked up a "patina" like Mikael's has.

I absolutely love the look of the Northern Lights knives but I am having a hard time getting past that top false grind. Other than lightening up the front of the blade and stabbing I just can't see the point of doing it? I'm soo leaning towards one of those custom handled f1's that Bark River did the handles on. They just seem so versatile. Hunting, general bushcraft, camping etc... Those leather handles sure are purity though... Ahhhh decisions....

You also have the NL5 Idun, in the same size as the CRK and Custom F1 and without the false edge.
The Idun has less totalweight compared with the custom F1 and balances better in the hand, as I see it.

I have used the Idun a lot on a daily basis at work and at home and it always performs!

Mikael, you have some good-looking production knives!

I have none of those listed but have always admired the NL-series, including the divine nomenclature ;)

But if the OP isn't sure about these, what about a straight "custom" knife from a maker here on the forums or elsewhere? For example, MLL Knives Woodgrove:

I know, not what you asked about and not making the decision easier, but there are SO many knives in that size range and intended area of use, the options are almost limitless!

Getting a custom if You can isn't wrong.

In fact I EDC a handmade custom order since mid August.
It's a modernised version of Viking and Medieval working knives from Northern Europe.

The focus are on functionality, tradition and light weight.
Low weight is of importance when You use and carry several tools on an everyday basis.
This one is around 3,3 oz.

It's made by the Swedish knifemaker Seved Hjelm.
He choosed a simple carbonsteel, close to 1080 and it works very well as it always has.

I ended up ordering the custom Fallkniven F1. I will eventually pick up the Frej, but for now I am thinking that the F1 will do more for me at the moment. Over the years of collecting, I've had many knives. I've bought more than my share of knives based on appearance. While the F1 is purty, from reviews I've read it seems like it is a quality build that will perform better in a general manner like I need. I can't wait to get it and I'm already looking forward to getting the Frej AND the Nyala too!

I have (or have had) a bunch of knives that fit into this category from makers like ESEE, Becker, Fallkniven, Ka-bar etc. The one I keep coming back to is my 'Bark-niven' the Bark River handled F1. It's super comfortable in the hand (more so than the NL5 IMO), cuts everything I throw at it, and comes in a really cool leather sheath with firesteel loop. I would say you've made a great choice, and can enjoy those others as they come along.

Those fulltang F1's made from blanks will probably be collectables in the future, now when they are discontinued.

In the future we will have to use the hidden tang versions and I have already started with a few customs (not F1), but here's my version of the fulltang blank.

The VG-10 steel is indeed a very good allround steel for many applications and Fallkniven knows how to get it right!

Nicely done. The one I bought was a barkie handled f1 in matron with white liners. Looking forward to getting it later this week. Going camping this weekend so it may get some use too!

Way to go Tioga!

I hope You will show us some pic's when You get back.

The ergos on this handle are incredible. I mean that too, very comfortable. I've always liked Bark River handles just not their steel too much. The sheath was extremely tight. It's getting better though. I can finally get it in and out without pulling my arm out of socket. I will probably send it to Chuddybear for some custom pants after hunting season winds down. THis knife is beautiful. The dark burgundy micarta and white liners is a match to say the least. Very nicely ground and extremely sharp out of the box.

A winner!!!

Thanks Tioga!

Yes it's a beauty and the white liners do add to the already good looks!
That sheath compliments the F1 perfectly and it was also my choice for the F1.
