Hi there fellow knife nerds, I come to you needing some help.

I have been looking for a fixed blade that will come in use while batoning wood
whittling and general bushcraft survival needs. I've come to a decision with going with a Fallkniven
but am not sure which series would be the best for my situation, The knife will be accompanied
by a Ontario Spec Plus Gen II Line SP52 for chopping and hacking and a Silky BigBoy Folding Saw.

[removed links to non bladeforums dealers]

I will be mostly focusing on making fires and practicing building structures/housing with what's out there.
By the way, first post here.. cheers

I have both. I bought the S1 first and for whatever reason I don't really care for it. I like the F1 much better.

This may not be the case for you as knives are a personal thing. I just don't care for the blade shape/size ratio on the S1.

It sounds to me from your post that the A1 might be more like what you're looking for?

If you already have a big chopper and a folding saw the f1 will fit your needs better. I have an f1 (very nice knife) but not an a1. The a1 seems like an inbetween sized knife that tries to do it all but isnt great for anything. Since you will have other tools for the bigger jobs, there is no need for it over a f1 imo.

i have owned the A1 and F1...both were fantastic and both were sold.

i guess i'm a catch and release kinda guy.

+1. Why get the bigger Fallkniven when your chopping needs are already covered? You need a slicer.

In your case I would actually get the S1.

You have your chopping and heavy needs covered. Owning both the F1 and the S1 I can tell you the S1 is actually a better slicer and the fine clip point excels at delicate work. It also will gut a deer and filet a fish better than the F1.

The F1 is a very stout small aircraft survival knife. It doesnt really excel at anything but it wont break and can do it all. Its actually a pretty poor slicer as the edge geometry basically makes it a giant wedge. The S1 is designed as a companion woods knife. Even though it is also thick the clip point is thin enough to do some good slicing.

Either will suit you fine. Good luck.

Yeah my main concern with the F1 would be how small it is, i like a little length on my blade.
I was also considering the A1 which looks to be an excellent splitter but again i will have the BigBoy
and Machete for the majority of the heavy work. I'm thinking the S1 would fancy the length and edge i'm looking for
in a whittling & slicing scenario, it would also be nice to have the hunting, fishing aspect to the knife i see potential is the S1.

Thanks for the input guys i appreciate it, and my bad on the links, won't happen again.

...

That surprises me. Not saying you're wrong, just that it seems counter-intuitive that a thicker, half height convex s1 would be a better slicer than a thinner full convex f1. Not that the f1 is a great slicer either - as you noted, its pretty thick for that.

Maybe the op should just get a mora for the smaller jobs and save himself a bunch of money and weight.

I have the WM1, F1 and A1. Always wanted an S1 to try out. Seems the F1 would cover you here, but without trying the S1, I'm not 100%. Good luck! Fallkniven are great knives and there is one in every kit I have. Tough, reliable, stainless, very sharp and nice grip!

I have both as well, and am slowly coming to the realisation that I would reach for the S1 over the F1 if push came to shove. It just seems like it will get that bit more done, while still being small enough to do the finer work you'd expect with the F1. You can't really go wrong with either of them, but I think the S1 might be what you are after here.
