Fallkniven F1 question

Hey folks,

In my hunt for my first Fallkniven there seems to be an overwhelming bias towards the F1. Is this because you edc it and find it to be a manageable size with the ability to take on tasks better suited to a larger knife?

I ask because it makes sense for this knife to be in the edc category, and when most people review it, they demonstrate that it can be used for survival tasks but surely there are better knives for camp. I.e. A dedicated blade role would be better filled by the A1 or S1.

Thanks,

Jason

It is a good size, and imho people tend to get a knife that is too big for most tasks. It may also be that the F1 is standard issue survival knife to the Swedish Air Force.

Am I wrong in assuming that my 3 1/2" folder could do everything the f1 can do except batoning? Most folders seem like they could easily fill the role.

Yes, you are. Folders fold, fixed blades do not. While a folder, even one that doesn't lock, is sufficient for most people, including me, there are things I would never use a folder for.

If I think "This task could cause my folder to fold," I use a fixed blade.

The F1 is a great knife in many ways and yes, I do EDC mine at work.
It will do a lot of heavy-duty tasks, I would hesitate to use a folder for.

I also carry a Leatherman TTI for the tech jobs.

For a larger knife in the Outdoors & Camping, I prefer an 8" blade as a minimum substitute for a hatchet.
The Fällkniven A2 or NL2 are great wood processors in the wilderness.
With a F1 or F2 as my main fixed blade, the larger knife seldom or never sees use.
This is because firewood is easy to get from the ground, where I make my coffee.

If it's necessary to do a lot of chopping, batoning and splitting, the larger knife is good to have!

Mikael

It's more than just a knife's size that matters, or even the strength issue, since you want to leave out battoning.

My F1 , outdoors carry, with PM2 , every day carry ( for the last week before that was a ZT0301 for a year and a half)

Both are pretty much the same size overall. Again leaving out the obvious strength issue the F1 is also far more comfortable to use for an extended cutting session. The handle just fills the hand better.

For those of us that live in the cement jungles, most everyday cutting tasks can be handled with a folder. I can say though, that if you'll be doing those tasks for an extended period of time a fixed blade usually would be the better choice. Most folders handles are designed to be flatter and slimmer to make them more pocket friendly. The only time I regularly use a fixie is in the kitchen, but that's MY needs. Yours could differ.

For me, a folder has more moving parts that tend to come loose and can break sideways if it gets in a bind. I carry a compact folder in my left pocket daily but I also carry a fixed on my side daily as well, I have a custom kydex sheath made for my F1 and wear it EDC probably more then any of my other knives. The F1 is a super solid choice for nearly anything but battoning, I use the ole ESEE 5 for that. A larger knife for EDC is overkill and looks a little to commando for my taste, my preferred fixed knife length of choice is 8 to 8.5 inches.

Jason,

I have many Fallknivens. And my favorite is a moving target. My first was the F-1 you can't go wrong with that choice. Then I picked up an A-1, and I like it for its size. Then I dove into the NL series.

F-1 with new JRE pants,

Lately, my S-1 has seen the most use. A little larger than the F-1 but light enough to carry without being reminded it's there.

The S-1 being admired by the Siberian Forest Cat,

If the F-1 fits your hand, you will like it. It punches way above its weight. It is not a tacti-cool Rambo knife. But it is an extremely capable blade that will serve you well.
