Hello all,

Are there any Fallkniven F1 owners who have seen the inside of the Thermorun handle? (Stock Fallkniven F1, NOT Fallkniven Idun). I am specifically looking for an answer as to why the site claims that the tang of the knife is a full broad tang, but looking at the back of the knife there is a little bit of tang that can only be described as a "nubbin," sticking out. Does the knife have a stick or rattail tang, or is it a full broad tang that has been adapted so a small portion has been built up on the back of the tang which sticks out at the butt of the handle? I have seen video and pics (Rob's knife from Canteenshop on youtube) where the Tang and Mycarta handles are perfectly flush... Someone please help me understand this. I'd like to pick one up but it would mean a difference between $80.00 if there were two versions. (The stock version available from $90.00 to the custom gripped version from $170.00).

In short I am looking to find out if the knife actually has a full broad tang or not. A picture is worth 1000 words if anyone has one referring to what I blather about.

THANKS!!

-M

teh rubber handled Fallknivens have a tang that is a couple of mm less than the F1 Blanks.

i mean in terms of width, not depth or length which stay the same.

iirc, it's perfectly possible to re-handle a rubber handled Fallkniven, but there's an extra step in there.

Google "fällkniven F1 tang" in google image search, and this is the fourth hit. Would have taken ten times less time no? :p

WOW. That youtube video with the tang x-rays is great! I think it's pretty funny that the Fallkniven Idun has a rather pathetic tang inside the handle, and the F1 (significantly cheaper) has a much more robust tang inside the handle. I know more than one Idun owner who might just cry when reading this... Sidenote, I'd love to have an F1 with the full broad tang-- as opposed to the stock thermorun version with the thinner tang-- with some micarta scales that keep flush with the tang, but these knives are significantly more costly. Right now my price range is around $100.00, and I have noticed full broad tang F1's with custom scales for around $170.00 (nearly double the price of a stock F1 on some sites). I'm starting to think this will not be possible and I will have to settle for the thermorun handle with narrower tang...

Most scandinavian knives have really thin tangs, some dont even have full length tangs such as the old Frost moras (the kj erikssons were always the best), the Frosts even had hollowed out handles to save material and money.

Full length tangs needs to be ground thinner than the blade to get correct balance.

The more material you have to grind off the more expensive, sometimes its cheaper to go full width full length tang since it involves less work, and its always the workers hours that cost money not the materiel.

But in retrospect scandinavian knives has always been about cutting, hence the short blades, but kj eriksson moras do well when hammering on the back of the handle, I guess the plastic is quite tough so they survive.

The prettier the knife the weaker usually, from a mechanical view.

Fällkniven knives are supposedly good but they are as scandinavian as sushi, since they are all made in Japan, Fällkniven is a design and marketing company. Good classic utility scandinavian design though. But newer moras are probably just as good (probably better for abuse since they use a much tougher steel), and they use Swedish steel and are made in Sweden, no outsourcing crap, they are extremely high value.

I have one of the F1's with the thermorun handle and was impressed and surprised that I liked the handle so much when I recieved it. The thermorun handle is very comfortable in use. Nowhere near as "tacky" as kraton, and has proven to be far more durable than I first thought. The F1 is a fantastic value. I do hawev er reccomend the leather sheath over the zytel, just cause I like leather more, the zytel sheath works just fine.

No need to spend the extra $$$$.

Honestly, even if you are prying with the stock F1, I don't think you're going to bend the "thin" tang...? I could be wrong, but I bet it's pretty durable.

OK. Anyone have a clue where I can order the F1 stock *LAMINATED* VG10 the cheapest from a reliable company? Thought I had a winner but after digging found out this was not the laminated version (which I guess was why it was so inexpensive)... Will look into the custom blade in the future but for all practical purposes, I don't want to spend 200 bucks plus (and shipping & cost of a sheath) for a knife that can dismantle a john deere. The slightly smaller tang will work just fine I believe... THANKS!

Try knivesshipfree.com and newgraham.com for availability. they both generaly have the F1 in stock.

I wholeheartedly agree on the thermorun- very comfy- especially in the cold/wet!

the leather is nicer than the zytel, but I prefer a combo of kydex/leather over either :)

Mtwarden thanks for the link! My F1 is wearing the zytel sheath and I'd like to either make or buy a better one for it. Exceptional blades I'll probably pick up an S1 soon.

zyhano- nice video :)

wildmike- Martin's great to work w/, his turnaround was very quick (especially considering he's overseas) and the quality is very good

here's mine setup as a kit (using the maxped sheath)

I saw your review and I liked it. I´m considering the 8 inch Fallkniven, looks good for chopping.

However you should be aware of that even touching ant hills is illegal, frogs and toads are (very) off limits too. Actually all animals, wildlife and plants are protected species in sweden except those you you are allowed to hunt, and those are ok only in the hunting season. Yeah maybe farm animals are ok, if you have the owners permission. Also invasive species are legal all year round, like white tail deer.

Strict laws there.
