Lately I've been interest in picking up a smaller fixed blade, for when im camping. I've come to find I really like the Fallkniven F1. I'd like to know your thoughts on this knife, any other knives that are similar to this one.

I dont think you will hear a bad thing about it other than some are not too fond of the handle material. In that case get the Military model with the Micarta handles.

Matt- It's a great knife plain and simple. I have used mine to skin deer and it worked great.

Also take a look at the Bark River knives, they have several smaller blades to choose from.

The F1 is my favorite small using knife. You can't go wrong with it and it makes a great companion to a larger knife or ax.

I have one of the early VG-10 models. I have yet to find anything to replace it as my small fixed blade for camping.

Any idea how's the price like for the F1? I would like to know which one is better, the military one or the normal one?

Laminated VG-10 is VG-10 (a very well liked stainless steel) sandwiched between two layers of IIRC 420J2. The 420 is a lousy blade steel but in this scenario it isnt being used to cut (only the VG-10 is) but what it does offer is additional strength to the blade due to added thickness and 420J2 offers excellent stain resistance. Dont worry about it, the owner of Fallkniven is passionate about his knives, he makes them to perform, this is no drawer queen. ;)

The normal one has a protruding tang that can be battoned, the Military model is much prettier and has a Micarta handle as opposed to the Krayton of the normal model. You probably will not see any appreciable increase in performance between the two unless you enjoy hammering knives point first into wood. (this is often done to fell a small tree so dont discount it)

Oh! Ok, so wad type of Shealth does it comes with? If I use it in the wild and expose it to the elements often, would a leather one be better or a Kydex one?

I got the leather full flap sheath. Nice sheath, but I will probably get a custom kydex rig made for it. Its not that I dislike the full flap leather sheath, I just want a bit easier access and carry options.

A couple of years ago Fallkniven was selling the blade and you could put your own handle on it. I bought one of those and pilfered some canvas phenolic from work. It makes a pretty nice hunting knife. Now If I could just kill a deer when I go hunting I could put it to some other use than cutting salami at deer camp. (I did also use it to split some cedar for kindling to get a wood stove started.)

Fallkniven still sells blades only.
Maybe a bit harder to find in the usa?
But some surfing and you will find some

edit to say: there are three diff sheats available for the F1

If you want a cheaper user I would recommend the cold steel master hunter.
Good knife for the bucks
