What would be better/more durable, rubber scales on the F1 or micarta. If you were to beat on the end of the tang or baton your way thru a log which would hold up better.
I know there is a big diff. in price but what are the thoughts? Is the micarta worth it?

I think the micarta would hold up better. Because on my S1 I tripped and landed on some rocks it kind of chewed of a piece of the handle, not a lot, but it is visble. Than again the micarta scales are about 100 dollars more.

I'm a sucker for Micarta, it's my favorite handle material. I'd choose that first, but the hard rubber that Fallkniven uses is nice to hold and seems very durable.

get the rubber handles, then when you have beaten the crap out of them have one of the many skilled peoplle here custom fit a set of micrata handles :D

I'd go with the plain jane Thermorun handles. They're not pretty, but it's a working knife, so I don't actually care. :D

If you're batoning the protruding tang with a log or something, ideally, you're not going to be hitting the actual handle at all, just the steel tang, so there's not going to be much difference between handle durability. I certainly haven't noticed any.

I used to think linen micarta was the sturdiest handle material available, and I still like it. I had a couple of really nice Randalls with micarta handles, and I liked them a lot. But one day I dropped one from about belt height and it landed on the butt of the handle on pavement, thereby knocking a significant chip out of it. I was shocked! I later superglued it back in, then polished it a little. I think this knife was an 8 inch model 14, so it had a little weight to it. I was still surprised that it chipped that easily, though.

So far, good responces. Tknife, I'm with you on micarta. But then 12Bravo has a good school of thought also and you could get 2 rubber handles for one micarta or 1 rubber F1 and an S1 and how much? I'd also hate to chip the micarta (thanks Dr. Mudd!) I'm still torn on this one. Somebody say something that will end it for good.

I got my F1 to be a user for smaller chores, carving, slicing and such. The thermorun/rubber like handles fit really nice in the hand. You'll get plenty of micarta scales later bro, :D ...

FWIW,

The feel of the micarta handled version is very different from the rubber. I much prefer the shape of the micarta but you may think differently. It might be worth handling both before you decide. Hard to go wrong with either ....

OK, Buy two rubber handled knives. Use one and then take the rubber handle off the other and put micarta on it yourself. Just take your time (no need to rush because you already have a F1) and make the handle custom fit to your hand. Then when you are ecstatic about the way it fits you, sell the rubber handled knife and buy a different knife!

i wouldnt take the rubber off, id just buy the bare blade becasue the rubber ones tang is cut down i little bit i do belive.

first off congrads on your decision to get an f-1 it's dynamite,,,in terms of asthetics the micarta is the way to go.... but personally I think you can't go wrong with the theromum handles I love mine it's real grippy and feels solid, and is more than functional....the rubber gripped f-1 is now approved by many military org. or use as a survival knife....it'll last It won't chip, it might get a little chewed up over time but that just shows it's been loved.../and with the extra dough you could get all kinds of fun toys

Hey Guys...

Good topic...

The standard handle on the Fallknivens are good..
My FI has been through hell and has literally been in 1-2000 sheaths, and been drawn while being fitted literally thousands and thousands of times and still going strong.. Although the guard is showing some wear...

With that being said,, I would absolutely love a micarta handled FI..
I've sheathed many of them and Always have wanted one..

I just can't justify the extra Hundy for micarta slabs..

The only downthing I have found with my F1 is that if you have used it a long time in a open leather sheath the finger guard gets worn down about .6 mm or so which makes it a bit harder to make it in the zytel sheath, the lock flap doesnt lock peoperly. But this is the ONLY downthing.
You can alost get two regular F1s for one Micarta one. but you could get a blade and handle it yourself with plastic padding or paracord or marble or whatever you want. :)

Good luck with your knife.

Personally, I think the Thermorun handle is really good looking. I like the forward angle of the guard, which gives the knife a sleek appearance. Kinda like a Ferrari, which looks fast even when parked. :)
