I'm looking into picking up a Fallkniven GP but can't find a great deal of reviews on it. Can anyone out there give me some feedback on the quality of it? I don't want to spend $200 on it just to find out it has excessive blade play or poor lockup.

I don't have that model, but have a TK4, and it is made with amazing quality.
I've heard others say the same about their other folder models, including the GP.

I wouldn't worry about blade play or poor lockup, and would order the knife worry free.

I was gifted a Falkniven TK2 and although I would like to believe that the quality lies in the blade the rest of the knife leaves much to be desired. Handle fit to guard was poor, blade finish rough and the zytel sheath crap.
I have also had one of their folders in my hand and it was a beautiful piece to behold, no reservations.
One other point, I mailed Falkniven to inform them and their reply about the TK2 was surprising: They admitted that the sheath was only "fairly good" being robbed from the F1 but said that they had never seen a rough finish to one of their blades and that I should return the knife for their inspection. Worth 400 Euros?

I believe they have a booth at Blade Show. I'll have to get my hands around a GP there and see how it feels. They seem hit and miss with quality.

I have one and it is very good quality. Great fit and finish. The lockup is good, no blade play, centered. It opens phenomenally smooth and effortlessly. The detent is not the strongest, but it doesn't feel like it will fall open without a good jerk. You can actually open it one handed fairly easy to with the exposed top of the blade by the pivot. The laminated CoS steel gets ridiculously sharp also. It is quite sturdy and built well. I took that funky bail off the end and replaced it with a simple brass pin.

Mine is solid as a rock and the blade moves silky smooth around the pivot!

Tight lock and no bladeplay.
That said all japanese folders I have handled, has a small play around the pivot.
This is due to a slightly larger hole in the blade, than the pivotpin.
Nothing to worry about and it's nothing I notice when using the knife.

The Cobalt steel is great
It holds an edge extremely well, because of the steel and heat-treatment, but it also has a large edgebevel.
When sharpening, wich isn't often, I tend to thin the edge.
I have also convexed the "shoulders" on my GP.

The final finish is more production than custom, but hey, it is a production knife.

For a modernised traditional pocketknife the GP is a nice way to go.
The pocket sheath is from KSF.

Mikael

I believe the TK2 is a lot less than 400 Euro's!
My TK2 is of good F&F, but as You say the sheath is for the F1.

I have seen thermorun handles with a gap between the bolster and rubber.
It was on my KoltKnife and on two PHK's.
I rehandled the Kolt and one of the PHK's.
I also rehandled an intact PHK for myself, as I prefer natural materials.

The PHK was offered by Fällkniven as a factory second to a wellknown FK afficionado, for a rehandling project and I did the rehandle in Sambar Stag.

The right one is the one my fellow forumite owns and use for Moose hunting, the left one is mine.

Right now I carry mine at work in a homemade sheath.
I patterned the sheath after the Loveless & Parke Safariland, that was sold here on BF earlier this spring:

Maybe the PHK is the best Fällkniven I have ever used!

So please send Your TK2 to Fällkniven under warranty, as this perhaps opens for more options to homeworkshop guys like me...:D

I just got the FH9 in 3G.

Great knife. Personally, I find it more visually appealing than the William Henrys other than the REALLY fancy WH'es.

It fits nicely in an old sheath I had for an old Buck 501.

The Fallkniven clip works fine but the sheath is more secure. :)

Can you open the fh9 or gentleman's with one hand, with your thumb against the blade?

Thank you. I like the sheath too. I'm convinced now. I'll be adding a GP to my EDC rotation

I find it difficult to make a comparison between the FH9 and William Henrys. They're completely different knife designs. Among other things, William Henry doesn't make lockback knives. They make button lock knives. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And there is no arguing taste. :)

Every Fallkniven i ve owned has been amazing including the GP!! I think they might be the best production knife company out there! Just amazing fit and finish and their blade steels are just insanely sharp and easy to maintain!! I think im gonna order one up right now as a matter of fact!! :D

Hi Mikael, The TK2 retails over 400 Euros in France, FACT. I see that you are from Stockholm and therefore understand your patriotic stand but let us not confuse constructive criticism with national pride. Your after market work looks beautifully executed but I ask the question, " why should this be necessary on a knife of this price?"
the reply from Falkniven was an open admission that the sheath is sub par and they recommended that I try a leather option, fair comment as I see their leather is of high standard. When the TK2 sheath becomes available again on the HH site, I shall place an order.
This however does not excuse a poor handle to guard fit but I see the same on the Virtuovice review, so this is not a one off.
My blade was poorly finished with circular sanding marks on the blade near the tip and it was far from sharp.
I am sure that the steel will make up for the rest of the quality!

Thank You for the nice words about my work, but 400 Euros for a TK2 sounds like a ripoff!
This is a lot more than FK's already high quotes!
I payed 2500 SEK + 77 SEK shipping for mine directly from Eric.
That's 285,82 Euros.

With HH I suppose You mean Heinnie Haynes in the UK.
They are known for good deals on FK in Europe.

Getting high quality knives. has ZERO to do with feelings of patriotism!
I don't get involved in discussions of religion, race or politics.
It's about knives.

In my region,FK is availible in stores over the counter.
Except for Sabatier, Laguiole and Opinel,we seldom see French brands here.
This is a loss IMO!
I would probably buy more French knives if they only were availible here.
Heck, I drive a French car, an old Peugeot 307, so don't try any patriotic drivel on me, thank You!

Besides that, Fällkniven knives are made with Japanese alloys in Japan, by Japanese knifemakers.
Why?
It's because Peter thinks they are the best his money can buy.

I'm starting to remember the discussion about the handle finish on the TK2.
The issue I think You are referring to is also present on mine.
According to Eric, the whole batch is like this!

I have posted pic's of how mine is and also stated that this is so minor, that I didn't see it until it was pointed out.
For me it is a non-issue and if it bothers You, there are numbers of skilled French Knifemakers who can help You with a rehandle and finish on the blade.

I hope You see this answer as clear but polite, as this is what I mean to be.

Mikael
