Looking for a scandi type bushcrafting knife, already have a couple Mora's I really like as well as a Bravo-1, anybody have both that can give some feedback? I also saw that there will be a run of Aurora's in 3V coming up soon, so really the decision is, H1 in 3G or Vg-10 or Aurora in A2 or 3V

But neither the H1 or Aurora are scandi.

However, I don't think you can go wrong with either - for a bushcrafting knife, I think that comfort is most important and it just depends which knife you find more comfortable to use in your hands.

Oh, for me, I would choose the Aurora because it's more comfortable.

I'd love to handle both before making a purchase, but there's no where around here anywhere to try either of them.:(

Is there going to be a run of the Aurora in 3V?

I don't have the Aurora, but I do have its' "little brother" (the Liten Bror). The liten Bror has really impressed me in the nearly 6 months I have been using it

I have also been using the H1 for bushcraft for several years.

The Liten Bror has brought about a change in my decades old tradition of only carrying one fixed blade into the bush :D

It will now accompany my H1.

I have been asked on a number of occasions on different forums "if I was to choose between the two which one would it be".

Whilst it's a tough call, it would still be my H1 / 3G with a personalised convex grind.

I really have a preference for a bushcraft knife that fills the hand like the H1 does for me, and the wider blade makes a pinch grip more comfortable. It is also a superior hunting knife (whilst I acknowledge that most people these days don't seem to consider this to be a part of bushcraft, it is for me :D ).

Bear in mind, this is purely a personal preferrence and others milage may vary

Good luck with your decision, but I don't think you could go wrong with any of the choices you have listed

Kind regards
Mick

I think there's definitely a H1 in my future. I know most people don't, but I love synthetic handles for the most part when it comes to actual real world use knives.

Although I've had my eye on the H1, I hesitate because it seems to share the same handle size as the F1 which is smallish for my large hands. Handle size is a common complaint from many who have the F1.

I had the Aurora and it has a handle that felt plenty big and secure in hand. Can't go wrong with the Aurora and if it does go 3v, I'm in for one.
Neither are scandi's though.

The H1 is a chunk of steel, all right, and probably all the knife you would ever need on a trek from Tierra del Fuego to the Arctic. I had the chance to play with one on loan from Cliff Stamp for a season. But if you want a true Scandi, check out Ivan Campos from Tatui, Brazil (Google 'Ivan Campos knives'). I got one of his Scandi blades in 1070, handled in gorgeous ivory ebony by Kris Klammer of Edmonton, Alberta, for a very reasonable sum IMHO. The Scandi grind is breathtakingly sharp... I'm talking hair-whittling here, and the steel is extremely tough.

Yea, I agree with this. If you want a scandi, one of our fine makers can make whatever you want for a great price.

I was in the same boat, I opted for the barkie

Still waiting so I cany give you my impressions

Something to be said for american steel !

The handle on the H1 is beefier than on F1. It is more rounded and fills your hena better.
I really like it, even though I have four Fallkniven knives I use from time to time.
I usually bring at least two when I am outdoors. The one I dont use for cutting wood I use to make food.
The F2, the old model fishing knife, is also reaaly neat. I like that too.

I agree

The pic below shows the handle of the H1 (on the left) & the F1 (on the right).

The H1 and F1 were developed for two totally different needs.
The F1 is apparently small because you are to carry it in a pocket on the left thigh of a flightsuit all the time. The H1 can be carried anyway you like.

I've never owned an H1 but my only criticisim would be if it is the same thickness blade wise as an F1 the blade is a little thick for me.

I've never really liked the Aurora, I have one but the whole knife is really long and I'd like a shorter handle and blade.

southern cross, thanks for the side by side photo!! really helps. I just ordered a F1 and feel a H1 is next.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the H1 has an even thicker blade than the F1.

Talking about thickness of blades.
When I started using knives I used the average Mora knife. Different types and steels but in general the same thing.
When I discovered Fallkniven I got an S1 because I felt it was the best value for the money. It felt huge, almost like a pry bar with an handle and heavy like the H&K G3 bayonet I used in the homeguard. I got used to the "weight" in a Fallkniven and now I feel a Mora is flimsy and lacks quality.
Recently I got my hands on a Becker BK2 and in a second the Fallkniven knives felt light and small :)

I feel the H1 is perfect in size and shape. No, you can not stab with it and you will likely nick your index finger five times until you learn to hold it right. You can not hold it "casually" like you do with a knife with finger guard.

If I could only choose one knife, it would be either a F1/ 3G (one of 1000) or a H1/ 3G with the zytel sheath. Yes, the sheath is ugly but very practical. A bit like the one issued to the Sw AF.
