I used to have VG-10 White whale for a while. Overall I was pretty happy with it until I moved on to better Japanese knives. As far as western made kitchen knives go, IMHO Falknivens are really good. There's a longish K2 white whale knife review for more details.

But all Fallkniven knives are made in Japan. Pretty hard to call them "Western," just a different style than some of the "in" Japanese kitchen cutlery lines right now.
