Hey fellow Fallkniven fans.

Fallkniven is offering a limited run (only about 20 qty) of the PXL folder with dyed camel bone scales in a variety of colors, and featuring a new laminated Cobalt Special Steel (CoS) blade.

They are available directly from their website, just go to the Limited Edition section. (Not certain it is proper to post a link to a retail site)

Shown here is one in Amber

Check 'em out.

Still no information to be found on the new "cobalt special" steel. Those that know are keeping their mouths shut including Takefu, the foundry. They typically make good stuff.ike VG10, and SG2 so I have high expectations for it. That's why it's frustrating to come up with dead ends everywhere I look.

Same here. Could only find generic info on hi cobalt steel like M-35 and M42. I also found references to VG10 cobalt, but not certain if the reference was to standard VG10 or to a special hi cobalt version of VG10 because there was no additional info available.

I have inquired with Peter at Fallkniven whether or not he would be willing to enlighten us or not. If he provides any info I will post it up.

I'm thinking about that green one. But need more info about that steel, if better than 3G I'll go for it :)

Fallkniven only states it has better wear resistance than VG10, but I notice they run it a point or so higher than VG10 at RC62.

Sal G. at Spyderco has talked about putting a mule knife out in this steel but has not given any details about it. I'm looking forward to that as I won't be buying the fallkniven to try it out as it's a bit out of my price range.

NOTE: Much of what I present below is based on my interpretation of information gathered over the past few days of research. As such it should not be considered purely factual, and is open to contestation, discussion, and clarification.

I haven't heard anything from Fallkniven yet, but I have been scouring the net looking for info on this Cobalt Special Steel.

The closest I have found was a comment from Sal Glesser of Spyderco that Takefu is introducing a new Cobalt Special Steel made of 1% C, 15-17% Cr, and 3% Co. No other alloys were identified. (VG10 is 1% C, 15% Cr, 1% Mo, 0.2% V, 1.5% Cobalt)

Fallkniven's current steels have the following hardness ratings compared to the new Cobalt Steel.
VG10 = 59 HRC
SGPS (3G) = 62 HRC
Cowry X = 64 HRC
CoS = 62 HRC

In theory, based solely on the HRC number, the new CoS should perform similar to Fallknivens 3G steel with it's core of SGPS, however the addition of Cobalt reportedly increases edge holding ability, independent of hardness.

I also read that steels with high % Cobalt composition, that are hardened below their maximum HRC, benefit from increased toughness, but, reduced HRC sacrifices some of the improved edge holding ability.

Finding the right heat treat could result in a good balance between toughness and hardness with excellent edge holding capability.

I could not find any info on the composition of SGPS steel, so I don't know if it contains any Cobalt (VG10 has .8 - 1.5% depending on the composition chart you reference).

My guess, and this is STRICTLY A GUESS, is that Fallkniven is testing this steel to target it between SGPS and Cowry X. Improved edge holding over SGPS, but lower production cost than Cowry X, keeping pricing attractive to the mainstream market.

I was researching Cobalt Special fora while, no success. Started a thread on Spyderco Forums here, but I got pretty much the same - 1% C, 15-17% Cr, and 3% Co. Nothing else.
I figure I'll add it to the steel chart like that.

Kevin, thanks for sharing the info you have. SPGS is Takefu Super Gold Powder Steel ( SG1 or SG2) but has VG2 as a laminating steel instead of 420J like Kershaws SG2 steel. The composition should be the same as SG2 though. http://www.zknives.com/knives/steels/sg2.shtml

Thanks Mastiff.

After posting I found the composition of SGPS on Fallknivens old site. There is no Cobalt in SGPS.

Great steel chart BTW. I had never come accross that one before.

SGPS (edge steel)
C - 1.40
Si - 0.50
Mn - 0.40
P - 0.030
Cr - 15.00
Mo - 2.80
S - 0.030
V - 2.00

PXL's are nice knives. i carry my white-scaled PXL from time to time. :)

My Ivory PXL is in my pocket every day at work. It's getting a bit grubby looking, but it sure is a great knife.

I have posterd a few times before that I think that the PXL is as good quality as any Crhris Reeve knife in my oppinionm. This still holds. Its the smoothest knife i have including Sebenza and Unumzaan.

I hope they start selling scales on thier own soon, like Bark River does.

Kevin, That steel composition website is what I looked for everywhere over the last 15 years. Our very own Gator97 was the one to put the time and effort into putting it together. I can't count how many times I've used it since he put it up. It's a true resource and has some other interesting articles he wrote on the website that might interest you too. The ones about rehardening steels on factory knives interests me particularly as I've contemplated having that done a bunch of times. Look it over when you get a chance.

Gator, once again thanks from this steel nut. :D

The PXL is truly a world class knife. This one will be really special.

I agree with the person who said that the quality is on par with Sebenzas.
They are simply outstanding folders.

I contacted Takefu regarding the composition of CoS.

They did not provide a complete composition. I can understand them not wanting to disclose this information to prevent competitors from getting their hands on it.

This is the reply I received.

Please note each material has below C and Co.

VG10
C:1.0%
Co:1.5%

CoS
C:1.1%
Co:2.5%

SPG2
C:1.4%

Thank you and best regards,
Kasumi
