Would anyone happen to know if the Fallkniven Frej is made from one piece of steel or is the blade and tang two separate pieces that are joined. If they are joined what would the process be for a Fallkniven NLS? I know it is a stick tang but wasn't sure if that always meant two separate pieces of steel joined together.

I have the Idun and I would be shocked if it had a welded tang on such a quality piece. I'm thinking it's solid but I am not going to destroy the handle to find out.

Sent a similar question to Fallkniven via their website and got a reply within hours.

Blade and hidden tang are one piece, but the butt cap is aluminium. Aside from batoning the pommel I think the knife should still be very strong.

Let me try and post the picture they sent, haven't done this before .. ermm .. someone pl let me know if I'm doing something wrong or violating any rules ..

Hello all!
Yes the NL's have strong one piece tangs.
The linked pic from Alpha Tango actually shows the Frey I have in my collection.
If You look closely, You can see the threaded screw is welded to the tang.
Otherwise the blade and tang is from the same bar of laminated VG-10.

Regarding batoning, it is wise to avoid batoning on any aluminium pommel, but I have done it to the Idun and it held up without damages.

I found more NL 4 tang pic's on my external hard disc.

They show the forward part of the tang without the guard.
You can clearly see that the radioused tang is in one piece with the blade.

The threaded pommelscrew is inserted in a slot and welded to the tang.
Obviously this is made with care, as Fällkniven states that "no NL-series knife so far has returned in pieces".

The NL's in my possession has had to withstand a lot of hard use and some abuse too.
I don't pry with them but the larger models takes hour after hour of chopping wood and beg for more.
No failures at all!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Coping, I can't speak for Fällkniven AB, but I doubt this will ever happen.
3G is a truly great steel, but very very expensive!

Why not look at the NL's as they are, I mean where on planet Earth do You find a series of production knives with this quality?:D

Regards

Mikael:)

Cold Steel Trail Master San Mai III-A Kraton handled Fallkniven NL with a blade between the Odin and Thor, at less than half the price. Both knives are contracted out an made in Japan-it would not surprise me if I found out it was the same factory.

I believe it is the same factory or maybe was.
Fällkniven NL's are made by Hattori-Hamono in Seki.
One of the top production makers in Japan

The FK NL's and the CS Trailmaster San Mai III are not made to the same spec, regarding size, materials or final fit & finish.
The CS San Mai are very nice, but don't compare them to the NL's!

Mikael
