Which do you think is an all around better performer, Fallkniven's A1 or Cold Steel's Carbon V Trailmaster?

Thank You.

Hmm . . . a VERY good thread. This is something I've been researching extensively the past few weeks, since I'm looking for a fixed-blade and am considering both of these(along with a Busse)on my short list.

I'd say A-1. I like the Kraton handle, and I'll take their VG-10 over Carbon V any day. Size is comprable, but I think the A-1's modified clip-point blade is more practical. I also like the way it looks with black Teflon coating; it's considerably more attractive then the Gerber. I also think that Fallkniven's construction wil prove to be superior.

And hey, Fallkniven makes Kydex sheaths!

I have seen several examples of both. The Fallkniven product is very plain and not flashy in the least, but I have found the knives to be very well made, I like the VG-10, and they are a lot of bang for the buch. Same can be said for Cold Steel. I think you'll win either way. My choice would be the Fallkniven.

I'm not sure this is a fair comparison. The much larger Carbon V Trailmaster is definitely a better chopper. But it is pretty big and heavy and I HATE the cordura sheath. However, the Fallkniven's size makes it pretty much able to do everything and is more utilitarian (the steel is also more low maintenance). My vote goes to Fallkniven mainly because of practicality.

The Trailmaster is a much bigger and heavier blade so it would be easier to do heavy chopping with it while the A1 would have the advantage on most lighter work being easier to handle. Some things to consider :

The Trailmaster has a much weaker point, the A1 has a much more durable grip (with extended tang), neither have great sheaths. The A1's edge was much more durable than the TM and Recon Scout that I had.

Fallkniven if for no other reason than the hype that goes with the Cold Steel.

I think that Cliff has broken the tip of a Trailmaster while prying, and per another thread someone broke the tips on both an F1 and S1 while throwing them and sometimes letting the knives hit the dirt.

The tips breaking from throwing on the Fallkniven blades was very likely a fluke. I spent some time throwing the A1 with no problems upto 20 feet (1.5 turn distance). I'll eventually repeat this with the two F1's, S1 and WM I have. Long term I would not want to use them as throwing knives, but a few tosses should not be a problem.

I spent some time throwing the Trailmaster and Recon Scout as well but would not go past .5 turn distance as the points are really slim and I didn't think they would handle the impacts well.

The Fallkniven A-1 is more of a match for an SRK or Recon(7" bowie)than for the Trailmaster. The Trailmaster is quite alot larger. IMHO the A-1 is as good as or better than than the 2 smaller knives, comparison with the Trailmaster is comparing apples and oranges
