I’m in need of a moderately sized fixed blade for my bug out bag and am considering the Fallkniven S1. My thought is the laminated steel of the Fallknivens is going to be tougher than any comparable solid piece of steel. Since this is going into a bug out bag, I would favor its resistance to breaking over edge holding, I don’t abuse my knives, but if it’s what’s available, who knows what it might be used for. If you have other suggestions as to what might hold up as well or better, please let me know. I’m not to thrilled about the thinness of the Fallknivens grips, so I am open to other knives.

Also, I would get it with the Zytel sheath, do the knives rattle in their sheaths, I have a small A. G. Russell scalpel that also has the Zytel sheath and it rattles. Thanks.

I'd also take a look at the Swamp Rat RMD, Scrap Yard 511, Koster Bushmaster in CPM-3V, possibly the ZT 0100 in 3V as well, I'm not exactly sure how SR101 compares to laminated VG-10, I would guess at least as strong if not more so, but vg-10 may have an edge holding advantage, I'm not completely sure. As for 3V, it will be tougher and have better edge holding than either, though you lose some rust resistance compared to VG-10. The Bushmaster (just got one 2 weeks ago) is also about .22 inches thick. That said I do think an S1 would make a great B.O.B. knife. I think that an S1 or any of the above would more than fulfill any knife duties asked of them, so really its just up to looks/design/handle comfort.

The S1 is an awesome tool. The handles are not as thin as you think unless you have gorilla mitts. The knife does not rattle , if you do not like the sheath there are a ton of leather aftermarkets available.

There are a lot of reasons the S1 is so great , it is very tough , the blade size and shape are perfect , it is very corrosion resistant , VG10 is a wonderful steel... Get one !

Corrosion resistance is not a big deal for a BOB knife. Oil it before you put it away.

Consider Becker, Ka-Bar, Ontario and ESEE for plain, effective knives also. Carbon steels are good for emergency situations without costing too much.
