I have been looking for a good camping/hunting knife in the 8"-10" range. One that will keep and edge with moderate use and sturdy enoung to hack away at limbs if need be. I like the Fallkniven S1 Forest with it's total length of 9.7".

Any other suggestions?

Does anyone know of a place i can get a good deal on one? I've been told there out there for ~$85 or $90 with the Kydex sheath. I have not some close to that price. Best I can find is ~$120.

Also, is there any advantage to the black teflon finish that they offer on this knife or is is more for aesthetic purposes.

Thanks in advance for your time.

You won't be disappointed with any of the Fallkniven fixed blades - great steel, durable convex grind, and excellent ergos. My F1 is one of my fave fixed blades, it cuts like a blade possessed and stays sharp just short of forever.

You might also take a look at Swamp Rat Knife Works, a Busse produced line of moderate cost, basic utility fixed blades. The Howling Rat is in your size and cost range, with SR101 steel, and the legendary Busse double convex grind and heat treatment.

Fallkniven or Swamp Rat both represent tremendous value for the $$.

Go over to knifeforums.com. They have a Fallkniven forum. There is lots of info on their S1, as well as other Fallkniven knives.

I just got my S1 this week. Have not had a chance to use it yet, but it looks and feels like a great knife. Well suited for the applications you've described.

So, what is it about fixed blades that makes everybody yawn?

If this were a folder thread, it would have gotten 40 replies by now.

Things that make you go, Hmmm.

I think both companies (Fällkniven and Swamp Rat Knife Works) produce some of the best production knives available.

I like my Camp Tramp very much, incredible edge holding and extremely durable.

But the Fällkniven knives I´ve handled (WM1, F1 and S1) have been of very good quality, too - good ergonomics. But since I like the Resiprene C handles, the coating of the Swamp Rats better, I´d recommend SRKW.

I had an S1 and the blade is very stout but the handle didn't satisfy me. You might look at Greco knives - he has some blades the size of the S1 on sale for >>>>>$50<<<<<<<!!! at some website (check the "what's new" forum for the site). Greco's knives have gotten very good reviews from people who use them hard, but some find the .25" stock too thick. These latest knives of his are .20", a little bit thinner.
