I have been looking for a good camping/hunting knife in the 8"-10" range. One that will keep and edge with moderate use and sturdy enoungh to hack away at limbs if need be. I like the Fallkniven S1 Forest with it's total length of 9.7".

Any other suggestions?

Does anyone know of a place i can get a good deal on one? I've been told there out there for ~$85 or $90 with the Kydex sheath. I have not some close to that price. Best I can find is ~$120.

Also, is there any advantage to the black teflon finish that they offer on this knife or is is more for aesthetic purposes.

Thanks in advance for your time.

I have not priced Fallknivens lately but some one else here has, and will almost certainly list the best online deals currently :) I know Bayu Laforche (sp ?) carries them and they usually have good prices, www.knifeworks.com
When you say 8"- 10" range are you referring to blade length or over all length?- the s1 is 9.7" over all, 5-1/8" blade. It is neutral balanced right by index finger, not good for chopping. By hacking at limbs do you mean for shelter building or path clearing like with a machete? If the second then get a machete, the s1 and any small knife (even big bowies) will be near useless. For the former you can supplement with a saw, otherwise I would recommend upgrading to bgger bladed knife if this chopping is important for you to have in a knife.
The black coat is partly "for aethetic purpose" and for anti-glare, but mainly it improves corrosion resistance, how much this matters on stainless knife depends on you.
If you like that size and want more chopping power, 7" Becker combat bowie sounds like better knife (I havent' used it but there are many positive reviews, use the Search function to find them)

Oddly enough, I just ordered one today. Here are a couple of websites to go to. I ordered from the first one, but am including the second because they have a deal going on, where on orders of more than $130, they include a spyderco tri-angle shapening system. It's something to think about. I know that I did, but I'm gonna save that for a little while.

for ~$75, satin with leather sheath

for ~$88, satin with leather sheath

And as an afterthought, here's a place to go in case you want another concealex sheath option.

Hope that this helps.

mkiger98,

Based on wanting to use it for I assume light to moderate chopping, I would not recommend the Fallkniven S1; it is a nice knife, but it is just too light at 7 oz. to be efficient at chopping. If you want to stay with Fallkniven, then I would recommend their A1 model - it weighs 11 oz. and is 11" overall. If you want even more chopping power, along with great edge holding, then go with the Busse Natural Outlaw (NO) - it weighs 17 oz. and is 11.5" overall. The Busse NO is $257 compared to about $120 for the Fallkniven A1, but the Busse has a lifetime guarantee and the INFI steel both holds an edge and is strong enough to use for a reasonable amount of prying if needed, and at 17 oz. would do fairly well for light to moderate chopping even compared to the A1. Martin raises some good points about chopping; by recommending the A1 and NO, I was trying to stay as close as possible to 10" in overall length. Both the A1 & NO would be stain resistant enough to not need the black coating for a camp knife, although it is standard on the Busse.
