So I've been looking at getting a Fallkniven S1 for a shelter/fire and survival knife. I spend quite a bit of time outdoors and I want something with a little more corrosion resistance than 1095 carbon which I do like. I have the A1 and its great but I've been looking to go a little bit more compact. Ideally I LOVE 5 inch blades although I'm a bit concerned about the "tip breakage" and "brittleness" stories I'm starting to hear about the VG-10 lamination process. I'm also a sucker for convex grinds. I know there are a lot of knife owners on here who will know more than I ever will and I was wondering if some of you would be kind enough to give their opinion on the Fallkniven S1? I would be delighted to hear your experiances.

Tip breakage and brittleness on an S-1 ?? No such thing !!! Any problems with Fallkniven knives is very rare .An S-1 will serve you well for many years.

I have an F1 but not an S1.

I broke the tip on it. The last 0.2 millimeters :foot:

Sharpened it out in a few minutes and got back on with batoning...

Get the S1 and beat the snot out of it! :D

I ordered one from Knifeworks and returned it. The blade was excellent, but I found the handle to be very short, and blocky. (My hands are average-sized.) It just didn't feel good, so back it went.

You might look at the custom Fallkniven's at JRE Industries. They combine a Fallkniven blank with a custom handle. I've never tried one, but they look more comfortable than stock.

Oh yeah, if you're a lefty, abandon all hope. Fallkniven claims to offer a left-handed Zytel sheath for the S1, but (a) you can't buy one anywhere, and (b) their customer service isn't too good at replying (I emailed them about this a few days ago, and... nothing).

My advice is to try one in the flesh, if you can, before buying.

Have an S1 but it isn't a use knife, not yet at least, but do use an A2 and several Fallkniven folders.

I have had no tip breakage or lamination problems with any of my Fallknivens.

Unless there is a factory defect, If you break one of these knives, you were using it for something a knife wasn't designed for.

My experience with Fallkniven customer service has been excellent, they have always replied to my inquiries within 24 hrs (keeping in mind the time difference between Europe and N.A.). And the one problem I did have with a Fallkniven, which was a broken pocket clip on a PXL, the mailed me a replacement clip ASAP and it arrived within a week.

Obliviously, as with any knife, if you have a chance to handle it before buying that is always best. Regardless of manufacture sometimes a particular knife just doesn't feel right.

From a quality and capability point of view the S1 is a great choice among many great choices.

Based on my personal experience I have no hesitation recommending any Fallkniven knife.

You should note, however, that if your "survival" purposes do include hunting, you'd better stick to the shorter F1. Skinning a deer with the S1 is a major pain.

Except that, there's nothing negative to say about the S1. At all.

Fällkniven all the way!

no problems with my fallknivens, much love for my H1 an F1,buy a blank an get a maker to do it up for you a semi-custom,try DJJ he does awsome work on the knife an sheath, aloha

I have an S1 and it kicks ass man. Sharpest factory knife I've ever seen. I skinned a couple deer with it last year not too bad I didn't think. I think it's probly one of the most perfect sized knives in my opinion along with my bark river bravo 1 but my bark river does rust pretty quick

I have an S1 and it goes with me in the woods before my Bravo-1, RAT-4, or any of my other custom and production fixed blades. It is made to be a woods knife, and it excels at that task. I have a couple of F1's as well and they are just as nice if you want a slightly smaller blade. I prefer the S1 over the F1 because I like the extra length and there is just something about the S1 that makes it fun to use.
