Fallkniven S1 - Sheath Color?

Hello everyone,

A few quick questions. I'm after a mid-sized fixed blade to back up my Para Military or other folder when in the woods and think I've settled on a Fallkniven S1. The leather sheath looks great to me but I'm not sure what color it is. I've seen it on the Fallkniven website with a black sheath, on a few videos with a brown sheath, and listed as either brown/black on a number of different retail websites.

Has anyone bought one of these recently, what color was the sheath? Also, if anyone has the black-bladed version, how does the coating hold up? I'm not talking about splitting logs or anything and I use my knives to slice more than anything and whatever black stuff is in my Spyderco has been there for years and is still intact.

And this next question I don't know if this is a no-no on this website, if a moderator says so then I will promptly remove it, but where have you all found them at a decent price?

In the future, is a "general" question like tihs more suited to other areas of the website or since I only ever post here and 99% of what I do is carry a knife while hiking, is W&SS okay for this kind of stuff?

Great knives!! Sheath is black, both the zytel and the leather. I prefer the leather but the zytel is super light and compact.

The knife is available in both a satin and a black finish. The black finish wears off easily so the satin is the way to go IMHO.

The handles are thermorun which is a harder type of rubber material (harder thanCS Kraton by7 a long shot). They hold up exceptionaly well, provide insulation in cold environments and excellent traction when wet. The tang sticks out the back of the knife to facilitate tapping on the back of the blade to drive the tip into work without damaging the handle.

The S1 is a great knife and a very good value for your buck.

Plus it sharpens easily in the field and yet holds an edge well.

Factory sheaths for the S1 are black. It you have seen other colors, they are aftermarket sheaths... and some are rather nice I might add... :D

What about the brown leather sheath in this particular video? It looks identical to the stock black leather Fallkniven one, except in color, of course. A special run done in brown for some reason?

Also, is the black coating really that weak? I sort of wanted a black and black pair with my Para Military (silly, I know, but I already have a pair of shiny knives)

Sheath in vid is a black Zytel sheath from Fallkniven... "stock" as you call it...

In terms of the coating - I don't have any experience with it... my S1 and F1 are the non-coated blade versions... :D

Oh sorry I didn't clarify, the guy making the video shows the brown one, marked "S1", right after he talks about the Zytel one.

OOPS! didn't watch the whole vid... went back to look... the leather sheath in the vid sure looks like a brown version of the black leather sheath from Fallkniven. Never seen one B4. For that knife, you probably want a non-porous sheath though a-la Zytel or kydex...

I guess I'm a little old-fashioned; functional as they are, plastics don't really do it for me most of the time, truth be told I'm a bit of a leather nut and am fussing so much about the S1 sheath because I like it so much. Any reason in particular you'd suggest a synthetic one, assuming I understand the limits of leather as a material and what's needed to care for it?

Still looking for someone to help chime in on the coating option, and a good retail location?

Thanks for your help so far everyone. I have to say this website has helped guide me in pretty much everything knife-related.

The black coating comes off readily. Mistwalker on W&SS forum had athread where he showed how quickly it came off of his A1. He finished up bead blasting it off due to concerns about it coming off on food. The first time you use the black blade you will notice a good bit of coating wear. And it doesn't stop till it's gone.

I wish they would use a better coating. Until then I'll use only the satin blades. The coating is honestly my only gripe about the Fallkniven knives, and since I'm not tryin to be stealthy it is a non issue for me.

I like leather too... the plastic recommendation was considering outdoor/wet environments...

I have the F1, S1, and A1 with both leather and Zytel sheaths. I much prefer the leather ones, although the Zytel ones are more compact. They are definately strong for what they are, but are very minimalist. All my leather sheaths are black , but I've seen brown ones on the FK website. I would definately opt for the non-coated blades. I'm glad I did not get coated ones as it does wear off pretty easily as evidenced here and elsewhere.

My favorite of the three? The S1. Not too heavy, not too light , good bladelength for general woods use

The Teflon doesn't hold up, I don't have it on any of my Fallknivens.
A good retail location, try here.

Understood about the coating and the plastic/leather sheath question.

That's too bad about the black blades wearing so easily, I wonder how some makers manage to get it right and others can't seem to get the hang of it. In any case the satin finish IS more attractive and simpler is always better for me... looks like it works out to be cheaper too.

Thanks again for your help everyone!

Still, an interesting mystery about black & brown.
