Hi,

While searching for decent 5" blade knife i have found those two( or maybe you know other knife that would fit in my 130 $ budget ?):
Fallkniven S1
Scrap Yard Dumpster Mutt Double Cut

To help me decide i need answer to several questions regarding them:

- Which one will cut better ? : Fallkniven is 5 mm thick with sabre grind, Dumpster Mutt is 6,3 mm thick but it has full flat grind ( after thinning and regrading edge to 20 degrees each side)

- Is easier to sharpen, without electric tools ?
- Will keep edge longer ?
- Has harder handle ?
- What the length of cutting surface and weight in Dumpster Mutt.

Thanks,
Michael

The S1 is a convex grind.I use a butchers steel to sharpen mine.I have no experience with any Scrap Yard knives so I won't comment on them, though they have a good reputation.

The Fallkniven has a real advantage in that you can actually buy one of those anytime you want. The Scrapyard stuff is only available intermittently and their entire production runs often get snapped up a few hours after they put it up on their website.

If you want a Scrapyard knife then you need to be willing to monitor the forums on their website almost daily.

I cant see how you could wrong either way! They both have outstanding reps and are priced about the same! Most SY's have thick edges from the factory and need reprofiling, which i did to mine, to be able to slice like a razor. I cant comment on the Falk since i have never owned one. ,,,VWB.

They are both really nice knives. I own a Dumpster Mutt and its a tough little knife. It will really take some abuse. What would you mostly be using them for?

Or be willing to pay a premium to get one through the "secondary market".

Some of the Scrapyards don't include a sheath, either. That could impact your $130 budget, unless you can make one.

Mostly cutting, batoning, some chopping and a bit of prying.
Is that true i will be unable to get a spark from S1 while striking magnesium alloy shaft ? I heard that steels with medium amount of Chromium ( A2, CPM SV, D2 ) won't work well with fire starters ??

banana-clip: Could you tell me what is DMDC blade width and length of cutting surface + weight ??

NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER making huge amounts of sparks with any of Fallkniven knives and a firesteel.
It is not the alloy, it is not carbon vs stainless, it is not high or low tide. It all depends on how "sharp" the scraping edge is.
Why do you sharpen ice skates? Same thing. The smaller the radius of the scraping edge, the more sparks. A good scraper is a piece of hack saw blade because it is a very "hard" steel and also has sharper edges.

The DMDC version of the popular Dumpster Mutt features a Full Height Flat Grind, .250 (1/4") thick SR77 Blade that has been Double Cut finished for non-glare purposes.

Specs at a glance:

Steel: SR-77
Hardness: 58 - 60 Rc

The blade is really thick on the Dumpster Mutt and will work well for Batoning, chopping and prying. It is super tough and you don't have to worry about it breaking.

I prefer a thinner blade for making fuzz sticks and everyday bushcraft tasks.

I would pick the S1. It is one of the best knives I know of, the other are F1, H1, U2 and WM1. It is a straight up production knife with custom knife performance. You can afford to use it and it will probably survive if people borrow it and abuse it :(

One other thing is that it is sheeple but I guess that is a thing to consider in most countries in Europe. A fancy combat looking knife in an even so cool looking kydex sheath will make people call you Rambo in an instant. An S1 in a leather sheath will make you look sophisticated and classy and a person who knows things. The F1 is even more sheeple :)

One thing with the Dumpster Mutt. Why the huge choil? Are you supposed to move your finger to it when doing fine cutting?
Look at the S1, it has a working blade to the handle.

Does the DM have a protruding tang in the back? The S1 does.

I can't figure how a choil does anything an ergonomic handle doesn't, and imo, the ricasso/handle transition behind the choil is too wide on the DM to comfortably place the index finger there anyway. From the tip to the choil, you get 4 1/4" of edge. I wish the handle were a little more filling. The DM does not come with a sheath, I used a leather one from a CRKT. I've never handled any Fallknivens.
