I've seen comments about the Fallkniven knives with the SGPS blades like the TK1 etc but haven't seen tests of the blade and comparing it to other steels . I've just ordered a TK2 and will use it .Is there anyone out there who also uses these knives rather than have safe queens ?? How does it compare to VG-10, S30V, 154CM ?

I think Cliff did a review of it on his site, but I don't have the address off hand.

mete, you might google search BF for "SGPS Fallkniven" and see what turns up (use the Google advanced search option). I found a couple of threads that way that talk about the blade performance. Mostly they were talking about EDC performance of the U2, but that is the same steel. TKC has one and uses it.

According to Cliff, the blade will break if you put it in a vise and bend it past 90 degrees. The edge will not chip on soft concrete, {or cinder block}, but will chip on age hardened concrete, the same effect as soft rocks or age hardened rocks.

I wouldn't trust it....

All BS aside, I have a TK2.
The steel seems similar in edge holding to S30V.
However, the TK2 is my only powder steel stainless blade with a convex grind, so the slicing/sharpening characteristics are different than my S30V's.

The quality of the TK2 is outstanding.
It's the ultimate Swedish Mora.

I've been looking at Fallknivens also. My main concern at this point is that with the laminated blade and convex grind - I won't be able to use my Sharpmaker. Bummer, because they make some awesome knives.

You could use a sharpmaker on it, the blade just would no longer have a convex grind. What effects that would have on the durability of the edge I do not know. IIRC changing a convex to a regular grind was discussed in the Maintenance Forum a while back. I've never tried it and wasn't interested in trying it, so I didn't follow the threads that closely. You could Google for it and see what they said. Use advanced search Google to limit your search to BF.

I certainly wouldn't ask him !

I didn't ask you to ask him. I referenced his site.

My U2 is SGPS and it's a great little laser beam. I haven't used it on concrete, but it does everyday chores and holds an edge. Fallkniven makes great knives.:D

In one of those threads, Sal hinted that Spyderco might make a Caly3 in SGPS. Has anyone heard anymore about that?

From the composition it shouldn't act that much differently than S30V, it should be a high wear resistance PM stainless.

Larrin, IMO, it's a bit less prone to chipping at RC 60 and above than S30V with thin edges. It's a nice steel. Joe

But Japanese know how to HT it to 62HRC. And if you add more HRC to same Wear Resistance you may expect better performance.

Thanks, Vassili.

Well the wear resistance should be a little lower with SGPS.

The very hard carbides are those of V, Mo, W. So add them up, SGPS > 2.8+2.0 + 4.8, S30V > 4.0 + 2.0 = 6.0 S30V then has an advantage for wear resistance.

The thing is some of those carbides work with each other and other work against. The amount of carbon and chromium also has an effect on wear resistance.

I have and use a U2--I love it.

The steel is incredible. I like it better than the s30v knives I have. Although I have not carried by Sebenza yet.

IIRC, The U2's are RC'ed higher than the TK's. I have a U2 and a TK4 and the U2 is noticibly different. It seems like I read that the U2 is RC 64, and the TK4 is RC 62. I might have dreamed that though. Joe

They are both HRC 62.
