Just got a knew Fallkniven A1 and wanted to know if my sharpmaker is alright for keeping it sharp or do I need to learn to sharpen with the mouse pad? This is one fine knife and I don't want to mess up the convex edge. Thanks for your help.

Come on guys and gals. I know someone has some advice on this subject. I sure need some help. Thanks.

I am no expert, but I do know that keeping a convex edge with a hard surface sharpening system is very difficult. You have to "curl" the edge just right at just the right time to keep the edge geometry. A strop is much more suited for this.

If you have a convex edge, you should try to keep it that way, rather than create micro edges with the Sharpmaker. Maintaining a convex edge is really very simple and there is a ton of useful how-to info available on the subject.

for most things a simple stropping on a loaded strop will go along way toeards keeping a convex grind razor sharp for ever...in the event that you really dull it up you can lay sandpaper over a mouse pad and strop it at different grits untill your good to go....the mousepad conforms to the shape of the blade and allows it to remain convex while sharpening....you should visit the wilderness and survival training forum there are a ton of guys over there who only use convex blades and who can tell you alot more elloquently than I on hoe to maintain them.
