Fallkniven U1/U2 Questions

I've read as much as I could about these two knives, including the Fallkniven website, but I'm left a little confused about some things. One concerns the steel used on both. It's the same right? Cause for the U1 it says it uses 3G and the U2 says it uses SGPS (Super Gold Powder Steel, I can only assume it's a Japanese steel going by the name ;)). Reading the descriptions of other knives on their site, my guess is that SGPS is the actual edge steel, and 3G is the collective term for the whole laminate, i.e. SGPS sandwiched in a VG# steel. Is that right?

My next question is about the grind...it looks like a convex but I didn't see it stated anywhere so I want to be sure.

Then pricing...seems the U1 (a slipjoint) is much more expensive than the U2 (a lockback). I would think the opposite to be true. Is the U1 more expensive just because of the handle material or what? I'd prefer the U1 but would expect to pay the same or less than the U2.

Thanks for your help :)

Jos ... Jos ... where are you?

Jos has a large collection of Fallknivens and I'm sure that he can answer any question you can throw at him. He lives in Belgium though, so he may be in bed now.

Oh Jooosssss ....

The outer layer of u2 is 420j while that of u1 is vg1 [similar to 440 ].
the u2 is an early product which is with some advertising purpose , with lower price .
U2 is super worthy of buying in terms of quaility & price .
If you want to buy higher steel quality , zdp189 is a choice .those products are made in Japan .
U2 can be an edc .
U1 is much higher in price. You can choose Spyderco zdp189 , g.sakai Kanto ...

i've got a cocobolo U1 and a U2....the F&F of the U1 is much better than that of the U2 , which warrants a higher price....even though its a slipjoint ;)

Thanks for the replies guys.

I may be strange, but give me a slipjoint over any lock. But I guess I'll go for the U2 first for now just to see in general how Fallkniven's folders are...not that I don't expect them to be worth every penny.

But can anyone confirm that the edge steel is in fact the same on both knives? And that they are convex?
