Hi all, I want to use a Fallkniven S1 for saltwater fishing (possibly surf fishing, definitely boat fishing). Any experience using these in saltwater? Anyone doing this seen pitting or corrosion on a plain or coated blade? Surely coating would be better than not, but would a non-coated blade suffice? Need to choose which blade to get, want to avoid getting the coated blade if not necessary. Thanks for any input.

I would assume that there would be no problem as long as you rinsed the knife and sheath after a day on the water.

With 14.50%- 15.50% chromium content, VG- 10 ranks pretty high in the stainless category. So the Fallkniven would be just fine in a marine environment. But as mete already metioned, with most blades that see regular use, rinse and dry afterwards.

I grew up fishing and sailing in saltwater, and I think the S1 is not your best choice here.
The environment is ridiculously corrosive, and also the S1's strengths are not in filleting fish, cutting monofilament line, etc.
Moreover, it's pretty heavy to cart around while surf fishing.

Yes, the S1 is a great knife.
But IMO there are knives that are better suited to the tasks and environment you've mentioned.

I would look for something in H1 or X15TN, non convexed, and with a very sharp point.

Anyway, my .02

You should choose the F2. It is a fishing knife. :)
There should not be any problems with corrosion, as long as you rinse the knife everyday.

If you want to go beyond stainless as in the Fallknivens, I guess you need to use ceramics.
