I know that Fallkniven and BRKT get a lot of praise due to their high standards, excellent blades and superb factory sharpness, but how does SOG stand up to them? I saw a SOG Seal Pup a few weeks ago at Bass Pro and really liked the size as well as the bowie style blade. I'm more interested in the Pup Elite due to the AUS8 steel but how does it compare to the Fallkniven (esp the F1 and S1) and BRKT? I believe that the Elite is actually priced higher than the F1 but is it really worth it because I've heard so many good reviews about F1 that it seems SOG is overpriced and not as good of materials.

Which ones would you recommend from SOG (not just the Elite) Fallkniven and BRKT for a general purpose camping knife?

Ive owned two Sogs and there quailty is good i own one Bark River PSK which came to me blunt as a brick but it sharpened up easier and better than any knife i own.
I cant comment on Fallkniven but always hear good things about them but between Sog and Bark River the BR is a class above IMO i will be getting a Bravo next so id recomend that based on what ive seen and read.

I own a Seal Pup Elite and it's not a bad knife at all. However, I also own Fallkniven and Bark River. Both are better quality knives, IMO.

AUS 8 versus laminated VG10 ? The F1's steel far out matches that of the SOG. The F1 has simplicity and pure design elements going for it. Unless you just love the SOG style and sheath I don't think they are in the same league.

Personally, I prefer BRKT knives to the other two, but would go with a Falkniven over the SOG.

Sorry, but all things considered, BRKT and Falkniven are just better knives, IMHO.

My favorite all around outdoors BRKT is the Canadian Special. A bit different looking, especially from the SOG bowie style knives, but it just works so well in hand! The Aurora is another great one, more bushcrafty in design. If you want more of a "bowie" style, check out the Boone or the SOCOM.

Both the Fallkniven and BRKT will out cut the SOG. The SOG design is principally a combat / utility with an emphasis on poking meat, using a blade pattern drawing from nostalgia, that is also good for making shallow cuts. The other two, whilst making a good stab at poking, have a form following the function of cutting tools. Materials aside, that would also be true if we offered up a comparison of the SOG Government [that I quite liked], compared to say the Fallkniven A1. It's all in the grinds. The Fallkniven will out cut it. Compare the F1 and the Pup and that's even more exaggerated. The F1 will slice circles round it and laugh. Similar can be said if you compare the better cutting power of the BRKT design to the SOG. The SOG design is good for soldiers because its cheap, light, pointy, cuts most things you want to cut, corrodes slowly, and if you lose it a new one can be slid right in without any tears. The other two do that and so much more. In some respects you could consider those two being made from superior materials a bonus.

I wouldn't want to pick between Fallkniven and BRKT. Personally, I love what Fallkniven is doing, but BRKT makes an excellent product. To discriminate between them for the hand of someone else would be like selecting under-smackers for another man. Still, you could go midway and have a Fallkniven with the handle done by BRKT http://www.knivesshipfree.com/Fallkniven-Custom-Fallknivens/c466_501/index.html

Both Bark River and RAT Cutlery make excellent knives, in the US as well.

Both have excellent customer service and warranties.

Bark Rivers have a convex grind, and the RAT is flat ground, so you may be more comfortable sharpening the RAT.

Either choice is good. Just get what looks good to you.

I don't own a Falkniven, but have heard only good things about them.

While there is nothing wrong with SOG, I think they are not in the same class. To me, the pointy blade tip is a weak spot that I really would not use anyway.

SOG knives are over priced. SOG marginalizes and capitalizes off the military. I guess the original SOG knife design was not copyrighted ,so spenzer fader was able to create a nice little tax shelter. The original knife was not that great in my opinion. the F-1 should have been the MAC v SOG knife. Falkni company respects Japan's inovation for knives. Bark River is a great company that never uses the military for advertisement. I wish the original companies produced the SK steel sog knife.

When it comes to warranty, both fallkniven and bark river have less than stellar reps in the good bad and ugly. Do a search.
