I am looking for a general purpose field/Camp knife. I have used a Kabar for some time now and am looking to upgrade.

I was looking at the scrapper six but prefer the more Classic design Of The Fallkniven Frej or perhaps the Njord.

Anyway I am Looking for a 5-6 inch blade either a rust resistant steel or a good coating, with a single guard or no guard (small double Like the Njord okay) The handle should be either leather or other natural type but durable (composite or laminate is cool) with a metal but Cap and lanyard hole.

This knife is going to do general camp/ survival chores, light chopping and splitting (with baton), food prep, whittling, cutting etc.

Any suggestions of Costom or production knives that fill the bill???

Ps Price Range Is around 200$

I'm sure there are at least a couple of Bark Rivers that would make you happy- just pick out your favorite blade design.

Hi. Good question.

I have owned many custom fixed blades and many Fallknivens including the Njord NL3.

Custom knives are nice, but for that price you're getting something that may be hit or miss depending on the maker and his day. Beginner makers often make REALLY GOOD knives at a seemingly discount price but it may be only be because he/she isn't that well known yet. I've owned $200-250 fixed blades from newish makers that I'd easily put up against a Strider or Chris Reeve of similar size. There are a lot of good custom knifemakers on this forum who could kick anyone's knife @$$ at that price. Sometimes the maker is selling for that and simply isn't that good yet.

I'd recommend Seigal (not sure of the name) or Tom Krein but you might have a long wait for Krein.

That said, the Fallkniven Northern Lights line of knives will blow your mind! When I got my NL3 I thought, "I'll never own another custom knife again". The Northern Lights knives are THAT GOOD! They have the hard layer sandwiched between the softer layers which is something that no custom maker could do for less than about $500. They're perfect in every way. The leather is highly treated, though, and feels really slippery. I've never used one hard, but I hear the grip gets much, much better with use and abuse.

If you received any Northern Lights Fallkniven knife in the mail you would not be disappointed. Remember this because sometimes with custom makers (and I'm not specifically speaking about the ones I mentioned above) sometimes you're disappointed when you receive a custom knife in the mail. That's just a fact. Custom knives are made by hand and sometimes they have flaws that'll bug you. The Fallknivens will be perfect.

In addition to the ones you mentioned you were looking at, you'd be a fool to not look at a Chris Reeve with a 4 or 5 1/2" blade. They're equally strong if not stronger with around a .2" thick blade and can be had for the same amount of money. They will have perfection equal to or above the Fallknivens.

I should add that I sold all my Fallknivens and I'm now collecting only Chris Reeve knives.
The Reeves just seem a better value to me because I can get one refurbished after I use the heck out of it and I think I get more for the money.

I have looked at the bark river sandstorm and this is a viable option

As for Chris Reeve I am considering the mountaineer 2 But i prefer the oblong handle shape of the Fallkniven or kabar to a true round handle. the round ones tend to roll in my hand during choping chores.

Reeve also has a "Green Beret" line of knives with handle scales that aren't round.

TOPPS makes slightly lesser knives than Reeve and Fallkniven, but you might get a bigger knife for your money. They're also really strong and have good customer service.

You also might check out Swamprat, but they sometimes have long delivery times and aren't honest about their delivery times from my experience.

There's really a bunch of knives that might suit your needs. You might be wise to let this thread go on for another page or two before you choose. The members here are smart and will have many good suggestions if you can be patient for a few days.
