False blade comparisons?

Hatori manufactures several fixed blade knives whose blades are available in laminated V-10 (HRC 60–61) and Cowry X Damascus (HRC 65–67) — but are otherwise identical. Is there a significant difference in edge holding between them?

Parenthetically, would it be reasonable to anticipate otherwise identical blades at HRC 60–61 that V-10, S30V, and S35VN are approximately equal in edge holding?

There is a considerable difference in edge holding between VG10 and just about any powder steel such as Cowry-X. The edge retention is 3 to 4 times that of VG10. There is also a significant difference in cost also particularly as the Cowry-X models are also Damascus.

The cost difference is truly awe inspiring.

Blade/edge geometry is more important that steel type, however. Even a lowly SAK will out cut expensive knives with XXX super steel due to edge geometry and blade geometry. That is something else to consider when doing comparisons.
