I posted this in the Custom knives forums too, among other pictures from the Paris knife show, but I think it deserves a thread here.

Here are some pics of the falx that Achim Wirtz made for me. I've been thinking about getting a falx made since a long time ago. I was born in Romania and knew about the falx from our history lessons in school about our ancestors the dacians. Saw a few of them in museums, badly rusted but you could get an ideea about how they looked like. Achim agreed to make one back in 2003, it took 2 year but is worth the wait.
The sword is quite light and fast, about 1 meter long and the blade is forged out of 5160, full convex ground. The handle is wallnut, looks very nice and has the right size for my hands. I hope you like it.

I'm not sure which one I like best, the sword or the puppy you have there!!! Very impressive on both accounts  :D

There is a fellow named Steven Peffley who posts over on SwordForums. He has a falx that he made and uses in demonstrations. I have played with it a bit and it is a very nasty item, very light and quick as well as lethal. During the Emperor Trajan's Dacian Wars in the early 2nd Century CE, the Dacians and their falces caused the Romans to start putting cross bracing on the tops of their helmets as too many were being split open by the Dacians. They also ordered greaves (shin protection) and arm protection for the sword arms of the legionaries. The falx was responsible for lopping off too many arms and legs.

If you want to see pictures of Peffley's falx in action, look here: http://www.geocities.com/legioxxxcoh1/RomanDays2003.htm and then follow the link to the Legio XX site's Roman Days 2003 pics for even more. Peffley demolishes that scutum.
