Good Morning All,

An elderly family friend passed away. He had a very significant knife collection, and his widow was told I am familiar with knives. I am, but many of these are very difficult for me to identify.
I am working on identifying them, and hopefully selling them on Ebay for her to help support her.

What are some good resources I might be able to use outside of google?
I've been googling the blade maker, types, digits, etc.. for example one of them is "case 6185 ss doctor knife 1 of 3000 green jigged bone" however there's only one link, and it's dead with no pricing information.
Is posting on this site the pictures and details against rules?

Thank you.

You can post pictures all you want; but you can't ask what they're all worth unless you purchase a gold membership.

There's always a good response to "What Knife Is This" threads as long as there are clear photos.

Read the rules first. Gold Membership is required for this type of discussion in regards to valuation of knives.

If you are specifically asking for valuations, then yes, unless you have a paid, Gold or higher membership.

If you are just wanting to identify a knife but are not asking about pricing or soliciting offers to buy, then no. It's ok to post pics of knives and ask about their origins or getting help in identifying them.

Best way to find out what knives are going for is to search ebay for past successful auctions of similar knives. It may take a while of checking and then checking again in a few weeks, and you may not find your exact knife listed.

However, since e-bay is a bid-based system, you could list them at some minimum reasonable price, like $40 or something, and let the bids determine the value for you.

Or do the homework, invest in a gold membership ($30) and sell them here. You'll end up paying more in eBay seller fees than the cost of a gold membership. I've bought knives from here and ebay. It's a crapshoot. I found really good deals, like a knife that retails for 225, for 100. No, not a clone. And I've seen knives marked up that sit and some that people are willing to pay the markup because of its rarity. What you'll find with this forum is a lot of great, knowledgeable people that are willing to help. But we all have to follow the rules.

This. On this forum you see plenty of member who go out of their way to help other members, especially one doing an honorable thing the way you are. It's totally worth the $30 membership cost to have the memberships here as a resource, and then be able to list and sell them here without getting dinged by eBay's seller fee.

For the knives that have the brand name on it, you could visit that brands site and look around there. Also, some brands have third party vendor / distributor sites that specialize in selling that brand. For instance, search for the specific brand you just mentioned but with "for sale" after the brand name, such as "XXXX for sale".

Then browse through their brand models.

But, most certainly, a Gold Membership here will also provide much info from many very knowledgeable individuals.

Welcome to Bladeforums Snakehead.

I found a completed auction from 2020 for a 2004 Case model 6185 ss Doctors knife with green handles, limited edition (1 of 3000). It looks like case produced that model in green for a few years. The tang stamp, and specifically the number of small dots and x's around the "CaseXX" stamp is the date code indicating what year the knife was made.

If you're interested in learning more about purchasing a Gold membership click on the "Paid Subscriptions" button in the blue banner across the top of the screen.

In order to post pictures at your current membership level you need to use a photo hosting site like Imgur.com, posting the BBCode assigned to each picture. But as a Gold member or higher you can post pictures here direct from your computer (just one of the privileges of a paid membership).

He's been here since 2017.

Also consider listing these on the widows own eBay account.
Based on my understanding, the payee will get their very own 1099 for any income above $600 annually from this, even if it's not really income. Then it's up to the tax filer to have proof of cost.
Also goes for any incoming funds on Paypal, Venmo, etc.
