Family Hike And Interesting Rock

So my wife, daughters and I went on a hike a couple months ago. Right before I broke my hand so I forgot to post these pictures. I noticed the rock I found recently and remembered I wanted to post some pics here.

So I live just a couple minutes walk from the North Platte River here in Colorado. While hiking and enjoying being outdoors I was watching for a rock that looked like it would sharpen a knife. I carry a diamond stone with me but was just doing this for fun. I found a rock that worked better than any rock I've used before. A very fine textured rock that I am guessing could be sandstone.

I kept looking and found another interesting rock that has me wondering, artifact or just an interesting river creation?

Looks like someone was throwing a tomahawk at this stump.

Skipping rocks. You can see my town across the river.

Artifact or just a rock? It makes me wonder if it is some kind of tool for grinding grains or something.

Both rocks. The tan one is the one that feel like sandstone and seems to sharpen a little.

Cool pics Maus. If it was only the top pic I'd say it reminds me of a Native axe head or hammer stone. I've seen a few examples collected in alberta that look very similar. The hollowed out part on the bottom makes me wonder though. Can't really see any tooling marks on it or anything, so its possible it's just a river worn rock. You're right though; it does look like it could be part of a mortar and pestle set. Do you have a size comparison pic? Cool find either way!

Oh yeah, cant tell the size at all in those pics. Here are a few more. Its small, fits in my hand very well.

Ok that's way smaller than I envisioned haha. Unless you have Dubz-sized hands forget what I said about a hammer stone. Still a cool find; definitely looks like something was grinding on that one side.

Great pics BM. Those stones could be river eroded, but also look like they could have had some function. Were they found together?

Very cool, and interesting rocks are always fun to find. I can't tell if it's sand stone or not, but when I was little my grandpa showed me how to sharpen on one. He also would carve out names in them with his pocket knife!!! However, those stones were quite large, thick, and flat. Also the texture was more akin to 80-200 grit sandpaper. Very coarse, grainy, and would produce grit.

And that rock does look alot like some sort of tool, if it is or isn't just tell everyone it is. Make up some good story about how it belonged to some native Indian tribe for use in ceremonial medicine making rituals!! ;)

I knew you guys would find this interesting too. Gassy they were found about 6 inches apart along a sandy river edge with many other rocks there too. They were the only rocks that stood out, most were very round river rocks.

Looks like a good time out with the fam. That rock is interesting. I think it's natural, but I'm certainly no expert.
