I received a knife from my father. He had it made for him and it has some engraving on both sides of the blade. The knife has been used over the years and has some spotting on it, but no pitting. What are some cleaning/ polishing methods that I can use to restore the blade?

I am worried about scuffing the blade or otherwise changing the appearance.

Should I consider taking it to a knifesmith or jeweler?

I may seem overly worried, but this knife and his fly rod are very important to me.

I would take it to a knifemaker,if I weren't one.
There are several excellent makers in Washington state, Nick Wheeler is one. If you are interested, let me know, and I will provide contact info. Or you can look around on shoptalk here and you will find one of his posts.
