family picnic with a megafolder

Had a family get together in Napa yesterday for my mothers birthday, and was a little unsure how appropriate it would have been to bring a 5" folding knife like my sog spec elite. Early on in the day my grandma saw me use my leatherman squirt to open some packaging, and after that I was probably asked 5 different times to cut something open. When it came time to slice a french baguette, focaccia loaf, and several fine cheeses for sandwich making, no other knife could be found, and my uncle remarked that my leatherman couldn't do the job. To that I replied that I may in fact have a larger knife on me and removed the sog from my back pocket, opened it slowly then handed it over. I didn't know what reactions to expect from my uncle (who happens to be a priest), and other extended family at such a large tactical looking knife. I was pleasantly surprised when I received nothing but compliments on the knife as they used it to effortlessly complete the before mentioned tasks, my grandpa even said it was a beautiful knife :o. Once it was time to eat they were having some trouble closing the knife, so I retieved my knife then used the arc lock to quickly flip the knife closed after which my uncle called me a showoff :D. We enjoyed a fantastic lunch then continued on to the next wine tasting location

That SOG has 4" blade, not 5". For a second I thought there's a new model out, because a folder in 5" range is actually quite rare. I agree that the key is opening it slowly. NKP tend to think that fast opening folders are the sane as illegal automatics.

i agree. i was showing a friend my skyline yesterday and i really think it scared him. kinda like he was afraid of knives or something.

Its been my experience that people are appreciative of a knife when they really need one. Sounds like you have a great supportive family and you are well prepared!

Why wouldn't a priest appreciate a large knife...the Crusades weren't THAT long ago.

always nice to come through, and not get berated for it. :D

It was absolutely beautiful in Napa yesterday, where'd you have the picnic? I'm a Napa resident :P

Absolutely correct. A 5" folding knife is small when compared to kitchen knives. I'm beginning to EDC longer blades when I found out that a 3" folder is inconveniently short to cut a sub or steak.

we had the picnic at the Rutherford winery

I am really enjoying the versatility of a small blade on a sak or multitool to go along with the capabilities of a large folding blade. Living in California I plan to enjoy the lack of a blade length limit as long as I can. If there were no knife laws I would probably carry a 5" fixed blade, but modern folders are almost as good.

We have 17 family members at my mom's home every Sunday for dinner. My parents are in their 70-80's. So we all go with our spouses and kids. Anyway due to my love of various knives it has become the custom for me to cut up desserts(cakes & pies) with various knives from my collection. I think they like seeing which knife I'll have from week to week.
