well this is what i have come up with so far for my super quentch plates. these are some huge heatsinks the solid part that will tuch the blade is 8mm. these are 4" wide by 10" long by around 1 1/2" thick. i have mounted a cooling fan on top of the fins that lows air throuh them so that the aluminum stayes cool. here are the pics. let me know what think. i have never plate quentch steel before but im hopeing to try some D2 soon.

im actualy thinking about adding 2 fans per plate, but onley time will tell

Interesting, but how are you going to squeeze them together (with the steel in between) without crushing the fans?

im sure you could mod a g clamp to only press on the base surface, rather than the fins, or cut away a section either side of the fans to get right into the base of it... or either end, and pinch it shut. or even flatten a small amount off each corner, and put pressure on that way... you wouldnt loose any length either.

wooden plates, cut to fit around the fins? (im assuming a well setup benchsaw would do the trick to cut out the ribs)

many ways avalible, with a bit of imagination.

I'd go for an arrangement that utilizes those nice tapped holes in the ends. Something like a bracket that holds each piece and then connects to a vise, big welding vise grips, etc.

Just my $.02

My .02: You would be better off with solid plates 1 1/2" thick. The Al conducts heat much faster than the convective cooling of the fans will carry it away, which will allow the small mass of those plates to heat up seriously.

I just use two plates, 7/8" X 8" X 14" and push down on them on the bench. Conduction does not require tight clamping to get the heat from the steel through the foil-all you need is contact. My two plates will just become warm to the touch while quenching two 12" to 13" by 3/16" bowie blades.

Mass is much better for the plate quench than anything else.
