fancy knives and fancy britches

There ain't too many things in this old world that can get my goat faster than a man in fancy britches trying to tell me how to do this or that. Nor can I take a man with a fancy knife that just sits in his pocket collecting them little pocket dust bunnies.

Dag gum, I met this fellow and I was cutting on some rope to tie up some lumber I had just bought at the lumber super yard. He admired my benchmade knife and then showed me his real fancy shiney knife.

He then asked if he could help me get my stuff tied down, and I was pleased to have another hand. When it came time for him to cut the rope he had just tied, he asked if he could borrow my knife. I asked him what was wrong with his. That's when he told me that he does not cut with his knife. I could not help but ask him what he did with it, and just as plain as day he said he wore it for show. That the knife was too expensive to use. He was scared he would sratch the blade or some such nonsense.

I handed him my benchmade and we finished. Shook hands and I was on my way home. Never in all my wildest dreams would I believe a man could own a knife he would not use. A show knife, that he carried to impress people. Gosh, it was so impressive to see a man with such a knife. I don't know if my life was complete until that time.

Now, I don't see nothing wrong with collecting knives and not using them ones thats in your collection. But to carry a knife that you don't use, just to be impressive is a bit silly to me.

I don't have any collecting knives, but I do have some that are retired that were my Dad's or Grand-dad's but I would not hesitate to use anyone of those old knives if I was to be carrying one.

Would anyone one on this forum carry a knife that they would not use? If so, why? I ain't never heard of such, but let me know if there is a good reason.

God bless and keep 'em sharp, oiled and ready,

I will have to agree with you that collecting a knife and putting it in a drawer or a display case is one thing, but if you carry it in your pocket, you better be using it.

but one. I have a 25+ year old Case Bowie that was my Grandpa's. I don't use it. Other than that I don't have any safe queens. If it's in my pocket it's there to cut stuff. I wont buy anything that I don't intend to use. I like to own my things. I don't want my things to own me. You wont find some sports star's name on my CAT steel-toes, either.

All of my carry knives get used, but that guy has the right to do what ever he wants to do with his knife.

All the knives I carry are users, in fact, every knife in my collection is or was a user at some point. So what knife was this man carrying that he refused to use?

I currently don't own any such knives, but I might carry a knife I wouldn't use on occassion, such as a nice William Henry damascus piece, but I would alway have a knife on hand that I could use.

I'm with Steven Roos, I might have a pretty, light duty blade, but it would be backed up by a beater with a nice, sharp edge. I would never, ever carry a knife I wouldn't use for anything. I don't beat them up unneccesarily, but I don't baby them either.

I thought this thread was about something way different than it is, and then I noticed the R in Britches.

;)

I use all my knives. Sometimes i have a knife I where that looks fancier but none the less it will get used. Besides whats the point on spending so much money to get an tough knife if you are never going to use it.(Collecting excused)

If it's in my pocket it get's used, even the $300 WH, or any of the customs, they all get used.

The only exception is my Spyder Card that sits in my wallet, and the only reason for that is because I have many other EDC's on me and the Spyder Card is a razor sharp emergency backup, I know this knife will shave hair or fillet skin, because it's never used. That don't mean that I wouldn't use it if the need presented itself.

If I carry it, I use it. If I decide to carry an expensive and very nice knife I'll still use it, but I'll be a little picky HOW I use it at first - until the "new knife" aura wears off or a few good scratches get on it. I keep my handy Old Timer stockman in my coin pocket for those more abusive jobs (or for lending out).

Yeah - Lending it out is a concern, so it's nice to have a small EDC that's just for that purpose.

You might love your low to mid-range high dollar custom and know what that knife is all about, but lots of folks unfamiliar might drop it and figure you can go to the store and go get another one. They might look at that knife, scratch their head and say, what was that, worth $65.00??

Truth be told, I am paying off my first dress custom folder that's setting me back quite a bit - then we'll see if I have the cujones to put the pedal to the metal.

I have done it! I admit it. I carried several pockets full of very, very fancy knives that I wouldn't use to pick my fingernails with much less cut a rope. Each one was in it's protective sheath so as not to get scratched. :D :D :D Did I mention that I was one my way to show them off to my knife loving friends??

As far as what other people (non-friends) think of my knives....who cares, just get out of my way! :D :D :D

I have one of these fancy little William Henry mother-of-pearl jobs. I carry it around when I'm dressed-up. Now, that doesn't mean I wouldnt use it! I wouldn't try to chop through a log with it, not that it would work, but I wouldn't hesitate to cut some rope.

Well i own a very nice elishiwitz with damascus that i normally carry as a dress knife. I'm choosy bout what i cut with it and normally use my bud neally or another knife that i have on me for rough jobs. and if it came down to it i'm confident that whatever knife i had would work for whatever job i needed it for. I understand wanting to be careful with your dress knife but be sure u carry somethign u don't mind using.

Sure.., as a matter of fact I've done it many times at Knife Shows. A good way to advertise, and have what you want to trade or sell handy. I think that is the most common, and best reason I can think of...

On a daily basis, I do agree it seems silly, and I don't carry knives I won't use around in general day-to-day life either. I have toted a few to shows that weren't for sale either (and not "users"), and I guess I'd just call that showing off <~~ can't think of a more complimentary term for it...lol...(let's go with "Pride of Ownership) :)

I have actually known quite a number of people that carry very high end knives and have no intention of using them at all, but I don't see that as any different than "Yuppies" buying a huge 4-Wheeler that is jacked up so high you need to parachute out of it. :)
They have absolutely no intention at all of ever going "Off-Road".., and get pissy if the Mickey Thompson wheels get mud splashed on them.

The way I look at it.., if they enjoy doing that.., no big deal? If it makes them happy, and they are decent people..., I can think of things that irritate me far more...

"Mall-Ninjas".., and Para-Military types that memorize ever issue of "Soldier of Fortune"..., roaming around looking like total fools to intimidate people tend to bother me way more, but if some guy wants to carry a $850 folder in his pocket that he'll never use.., I suppose that doesn't really shock me given the fact they think of it more as "Covert Jewelry" than a knife....

Heck.., my sister wears some jewelry that makes me nervous because of the cost, but I think it all boils down to a "Different Strokes"....sort of deal...??

On second thought, if you're carrying a dress folder, that must mean you're all dressed up. So what kind of cutting chores do you really find a need to so, say, when you're at church or at a party.

Alright, cutting open a bag of Cheeze-Wiz crackers or something ...
