Hi Guys,
Ive not posted before but been looking at your site today & thought some of you might like to see this lovely khukri posted on ethnographic forum yesterday.

The original post is here. Ethnographic arms forum.

I only have an old not special khukri from ebay but will be looking into these here Himalayen ones.

Absolutely gorgeous! One of John Powell's posts. He ALWAYS has great stuff.

Welcome, Chandan.

Thanks Dave. I was just about to post that picture here. Details: a hanshee from c1770-1820, very well made velvet covered scabbard with elaborate silver chape and locket details (will post pix later), remarkable polished chandan grip, and 17.5" o/a.

Oh my. That borders on art! It is difficult to believe that such knives still exist. Cherish that blade (edit to mean cherish it as one can of physical objects).

Thats a great decorative blade you have thier John, & a nice smelly
incense sandlewood handle, how appropriate, :D
I just assumed it was Rosewood.

Glad you all like the piece, I thought you would.

It looks mighty fine for a 200 year old piece of steel, Im sure Ive seen the ghurka pix from the indian mutiny with kukri like this then though.{about 1858 or so.} could that be possible?

Chandan is my favorite incense, got some burning right now ;)

The drawings and even early photos of Gurkhas with kukris show that they carried hanshees into the 1860s. There were other styles being issued by then, but check carefully since so many of these look similar.

Nope, not rosewood, but the polish is so intense it appears to be. You can smell the difference. Here's a picture of the whole package including the kalti and it's tinder pouch.

Absolute, classic, speechless, WOW!

Tell me that kukri isn't alive, and with stories to tell...

Ad Astra

AA - HIKV will do that to you.

Just try not to talk to your khuks around those who don't understand.

It'll get you talked about.

At worst it'll get you talked about on daily rounds.

Like the shape of a molecule under a microscope, HIKV in itself can only be observed as an art form.

We're all just art collectors.

Functional art is best, in my view.

and yes, if one won't present its credentials, gift it to another.

It's not for you. To give away a HI khuk is to invest in many things.

I could spend a month looking at this.

What're the chances of this hanshee making the March calender? ;)
